Reviews
"I grew up in the Bay Area. The bay club was always a prestigious brand known for its hospitality and high quality service & amenities. My girlfriend & I signed up two months ago, and I was excited to join. Now, we have sinus infections from the sauna and steam room. I haven’t seen them clean either once. When I asked the front desk if they document when they clean them, she said no. Not only is the entire facility extremely over crowded, it’s outright disgusting. Just smell the steam room. They aren’t even trying. Shame on ownership. Shame on management. Your money grubbing strategy may have squeezed some cash out of membership in the short term, but you’ve lost us all long term, and ruined an incredible local brand."
"I am writing this review to express my disappointment in both the Bay Club and its Management. First, I am an executive member of +10 years of history with the Bay Club in SF and I’m canceling my membership because this gym doesn’t live up anymore to the standards I’m paying. They have introduced a shared membership where a group of “roommates” can share the cost of one membership so they pay a lot less than a single membership. This has caused the gym to get over crowded by members paying way less than what I pay, but they get all the same benefits and features, all while the cost of my single user membership has gone up to $335 per month. I’m using the same overrun facility and paying so much more. I tried to use the 8 person sauna over the last few weeks and lately it is packed with 12-14 people standing, making it an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. The cleanliness of the gym overall is not as good as it once was either. Workout space is not good based on the number of members. There aren’t enough benches for example, 1 flat bench press in the whole indoor gym… this is Worse than 24 Hour fitness. I’m also disappointed because I asked the membership executives to give me a fair option to pay what everyone else is paying as a single member and instead of thanking me for my loyalty and finding a way to fix the situation they instead recommended that “the best thing to do is cancel and check back in the future”. After 10 years of being a premium member I feel very unappreciated. I asked if I could suspend my membership (which they should definitely allow for such loyal members) but the gym supposedly doesn’t allow this option anymore. So after over a decade of being a loyal and high paying member of the Bay Club I am leaving. The Bay Club has shown its colors that it doesn’t value its loyal members and dismisses them with poor customer service and attitude, no matter how long you’ve been a member or how much you pay. The new shared membership brings a new kind of crowd that is pushing out the loyal members and damaging the quality of the experience. I have brought guests in who are members at Equinox for less money and they said my Bay Club is “a dump” compared to theirs."
"I have been a member on and off for over 2 decades. The club has gone way down hill and I would be embarrassed to bring a guest to the Bay Club at Greenwich Street. The women's locker room is filthy and worn down. There are big hair clumps in the shower drains, dirty floor tiles, filthy hot tub tiles, and worn out grout in the sinks. The exercise equipment is dirty, and my recent guest commented how run down and dirty the club was. I have written to management to attempt to communicate the cleanliness issues, but it has actually gotten worse over time. They have gotten rid of many of the nice amenities the club used to have. They removed the nice sandwich/salad/smoothie bar and replaced it with an uninviting smoothie robot. They bought cheap ikea furniture with ugly faux leather chairs to replace the more comfortable furniture in the lounge areas. They downgraded and removed most of the spa facility. They have changed the membership model to cheap 5 person memberships, so usage has increased - with lots of young people - all on their cell phones in the locker rooms. The staffing levels have seemingly gone down. When I first joined in the late 90s, I was escaping a crowded and dirty 24 hour fitness. Now I have to escape the overcrowded dirty Bay Club. This place used to be a premier nice clean club with lots of amenities, but no more."
"Bay Club raised our membership price without properly notifying us - they snuck the rate increase in the December newsletter but did NOT actually let us know our rates were increasing…. who even reads the newsletter? They’re also trying to make the yoga class additional $40, which is far more than any yoga studio drop in in San Francisco. I really love this gym but it feels like they’re trying to squeeze members for more money and aren’t truly prioritizing member experience or community. If they raise rates again our membership will likely move to Equinox instead given the amenities are more updated and there’s access to more locations nationally."
"Well, well, well, look who finally made it to the Bay Club on Greenwich! Let me tell you, this place is fancy pants. The staff is so friendly, I felt like I was at a family reunion (minus the awkward hugs). And let's talk about clean, it's like they have a cleaning army that never sleeps. The indoor spaces are so large you could probably fit a small country in here. But, the real highlight is the yoga studio - it's amazing, although they could turn up the heat a bit, my toes were freezing! And don't even get me started on the two swimming pools, sauna, and steam room - it's like I died and went to fitness heaven. Now, I have to be honest, this place is definitely for the more conservative, stable, and wealthy crowd. It's like a city-based country club. And most of the members are older, so if you're looking for a hip, culturally relevant crowd, Equinox or Crunch might be more your scene. But if you can handle hanging with the mature, established set, and you go during off-peak hours, you'll have plenty of room to do your yoga and pump some iron without feeling crowded. And hey, the rooftop workout area is pretty sweet, and the cafe has Wi-Fi, so you can pretend to work while you actually just people-watch. All in all, I give the Bay Club on Greenwich gets 4 stars from me."
