Sumêg Village, located in Trinidad, California, is a unique tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse into traditional Yurok culture. The village features authentic Yurok family houses, a sweathouse, changing houses, a redwood canoe, and a dance house. It is used by the local Yurok community for educational purposes and to share their rich culture with park visitors.
Throughout the year, Sumêg Village hosts various celebrations and welcomes school groups studying California history. The village was planned and constructed in the 1990s by the Yurok people in collaboration with park staff. Modern amenities such as a parking area, covered cook shelter, and picnic tables are available for visitors.
The structures in Sumêg Village are made from redwood trees that have fallen in North Coast state parks, as well as local materials like stone and willow "ties". The name "Sumêg" refers to the Sue-meg area, which was historically used as a seasonal encampment by the Yurok people.
Adjacent to the village is a garden maintained by the Sue-meg Garden Club, showcasing native plants of the area. Sumêg Village offers a truly immersive experience for those interested in the history and culture of the Yurok people.

"A wonderful piece of history. Glad the park honors its first inhabitants by name. Don't miss this feature when visiting the park!"
"Very cool place, would love to see a reenactment of life there."
"Beautiful hike, interesting buildings and gardens. Plenty of restrooms, grills, and picnic areas."
"Vising the Sumeg Village was one of the highlights of the Sumeg State Park for me. The park fee is 8 dollars per car. There are plenty of parking available. In the village you will find clean restrooms, picnic tables and the village itself. The village is a replica of a Yurok village and it is really well maintained. By going to this village one will learn more about the Yurok people and how was the life of the Native American population in North America before the Europeans arrived. This village for me was almost like a time machine and I got deeply connected to it. I really recommend it to everyone that loves history, human culture and nature."
"what an amazing place! our first stop on getting to the area was the Sumêg Village and we were not disappointed! the Yurok people, who have stewarded this land since all least 1300 AD, built, maintain, and use this village as not only a historical recreation of their ancestral ways, but also an active part of their ceremony practice. we could feel the sacred energy in the ground and felt compelled to go barefoot in respect. so too with the native plant garden, just about to explode into bloom at our visit at the beginning of Spring. everything feels like it belongs (and you will belong too for the time of your visit). the trees are happy and the land rejoices!"
