"These apartments DELIVER ON THEIR PROMISE: Modern and secure housing (if you get a parking spot in the garage) close to campus, with all amenities inside the apartment, especially the washer and dryer. Great views from the top. Hungry? Trader Joe's is right there. Very happy to have rented there, thank you!"
"I lived in the New California for a little over a year. My partner and I had a really great experience. Bypass the pain and aches of having to deal with the inattentive landlords and ancient apartments you’ll come across at other housing options in Berkeley and come live at the New Californian. If you’re a student or a new working professional, this spot is a great bang for your buck while still getting a more modern apartment compared to the majority of other options in Berkeley. My unit was well kept and in great condition upon moving in. There was more than enough room in a 1 bed 1 bath to accommodate 2 adults working from home. Appliances were not outdated and everything functioned really well. If there were ever any maintenance issues, the building maintenance team was there to help out and fix the issue. You won’t have to wait for an inattentive landlord that may or may not fix your apartment issues. There are 2 amazing resident managers, Toby & Moto, on site to help you out with anything that comes up in your day to day life. Toby & Moto have always been super speedy with replying to any texts I sent them about issues I encountered in the building. They’re super friendly and helpful. Couldn’t have asked for better resident managers to help make sure your stay here is as smooth as possible. They’re a wonderful new addition to our community! The complex is conveniently placed on top of the Berkeley Trader Joes and it’s been one of my favorite perks of living in the building. I can go grocery shopping and back in 10 mins during non-busy hours in between meetings or class. Flexibility to do your grocery shopping on your own time will save you in the long run from having to beat those Sunday grocery crowds. The mailroom situation is better than most places I’ve stayed at in Berkeley. There are secure mail lockers where residents can retrieve their packages without having to worry about theft. Still be sure to retrieve your packages the day they arrive to ensure their safety. If you’re a commuter or from out of town, there’re parking options available to you as well in a secure parking garage underground that’s dedicated to the residents. To address the previous poor reviews here, my experiences didn’t match up with any of what the negative reviews mentioned. I believe the negative attacks on Toby & Moto were quite unjustified and you can tell from the discourse used in the review that the reviewer left those poor remarks based on bias and unsound facts. There was 1 review that made a discriminatory comment on the accent of one of the resident managers. I’d say that’s proof enough to discredit their negative reviews. No excuse for making complaints that are discriminatory and not based on actual performance. The Hudson McDonald team with Aurelia, have always been super accommodating and helpful. They even let us extend our lease a few weeks past the expiration until our next place was ready to move into. Little acts of kindness like that made all the difference and alleviated much stress. I encourage everyone reading these previous reviews to take them with a grain of salt. Really take the time to detect the bias and excessive emotion that some of the reviews were written with. To end with, the courtyard is a perfect way to get some fresh air especially if you’re someone who’s a work from home employee, or a student hard at work studying for finals. The rooftop area was one of my favorites and I always loved bringing friends up to the top to enjoy a meal and watch the sunset. Not many places offer such a nice view of the entire city. This is just the icing on the cake!"
"Lived here for 1 year while studying at Berkeley and could not be happier with the apartment, building and supporting staff! Building location is great and the rooftop terrace is amazing. Also the units are very well equipped, with in-unit washer, dryer and dishwasher. We never had issues with basic services or any other aspect of the apartment. When minor maintenance was required (e.g., repairing blinds), everything was fixed within days. Resident managers and apartment managers were always available, responsive and very kind. People who write comments with personal attacks against staff are either being disingenuous or have no idea what a terrible landlord actually looks like. Would definitely recommend!"
"I lived here for three years and had a very positive experience. The location is fantastic - right on top of Trader Joes and near Downtown Berkeley BART and near many bus routes to campus. The laundry and kitchen appliances are good quality and the units are well lit. The building and parking garage are clean and safe. The roof deck is gorgeous and a great bonus. Any issues we had were dealt with promptly."
"ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. My husband and I have been living in this building for the past 2 and a half years. We moved here from Spain to get our MBAs and get some incredible bay area work experience. The building in VERY clean and 100% renewed. Apartments have washing machine, energy efficient washer and dryer and 24/7 building managers to help you out if anything breaks (which by the way almost never happened...). Apartments are spacious, have high-Speed Internet and digital cable included in the rent and a HUGE roof deck with stunning views. Probably the thing I most loved in my stay was having Trader Joes (the Bay Area´s best supermarket - both healthy and cheap) in the same building! I worked in the city, and the walk to BART (downtown/metro) took me 6 minutes. Total commute to embarcadero: 30min. I truly believe this building offers the best value in town. We had many chances to move to other apartments and never did. As a whole, I would say: Convenience everywhere. Best choice. I am attaching some photos of our apartment when we left :)"
