Toby's Supper Club 3717 South Dutch Mill Road, Madison, WI 53718

"Let me start by saying we were there on Fat Tuesday and before a Badger basketball game. I am from out of town and not familiar with this particular club, so I made a reservation. After waiting almost 90 minutes for our food, I was told the reservation saves us a table, but our food comes out after everyone else who ordered at the bar. Apparently, it works along the lines of you walk up to the bar, place your order, and get seated at a table when your salads are ready. I waited at the bar for over 10 minutes to check in and was never asked if I wanted to place my order or told how they work. The bartenders were not friendly. The place was packed. 2 bartenders and only 2 waitresses that we saw. We were hugely irritated when all tables around us were seated, served, finished, and gone before our food came. It wasn't until we asked what was taking so long that we received an explanation of how it all worked. I've been to multiple supper clubs and have never seen anything like this. I admit by then we were pretty mad, but in spite of that, the server remained very friendly and moved as fast as she could. Out of the 4 meals, 3 were good. 1 person ordered a steak, and it was so tough he could hardly chew it. One of my favorite things about supper clubs is the relish tray, and this one was sorely lacking. We had tickets to the game, so we had to shovel the food in and go. We paid as soon as the food came so we could just leave. There are several supper clubs in the area, and we chose this one because of the high rating. If we hadn't been in a hurry, or if we knew the process ahead of time, it may have been a much better experience. Now I know how it works, but next time I'm in town, I will still go somewhere else."

"First time visit on an early Saturday night was an eye opener. As we approached, the parking lot was overflowing and cars were parked on the road (this was partly due to flooding in the parking lot from melting snow, making a third of the lot kind of unusable). The place is obviously popular ... it was shoulder to shoulder for quite awhile, so that was not fun. I'd avoid Saturday ... and regular customers said Fridays are worse! Luckily we got a chair at the bar and that made our marathon wait for a table bearable. The drinks are first rate and reasonably priced. The bartender gives you a dinner menu and a waitress will take your order if and when she can push through the people standing one or two deep around the bar to get to you. Be very patient! We then waited probably another 30 minutes and finally our waitress found us again and directed us to our table. The horderves were waiting and our main course arrived a short while later. Unfortunately our table was next to the door so I got a nice cold breeze often. The waitress was nice and the food was very good. The price was a bit lower than we're used to so that was smile worthy. I'd try Toby's again but I'd keep my fingers crossed for better timing to avoid the crush of people and a flooded parking lot."

"This is a classic working mans Wisconsin supper club! It's definitely a must stop on your Supper club adventures! Excellent service, excellent food, excellent drinks. Go early, have a drink at the bar, and chat with other customers. Great environment."

"Went to Toby’s tonight for the first time. If you have never been there before, when you arrive go to the bar. You will get a menu. When you are ready to order, tell the bartender. Then a server will come over to take your order. When your salads are ready they will take you to your table. Great atmosphere, the old fashioned was excellent and the prices are very reasonable."

"The most quintessential Wisconsin Supper Club. Dark wood panel, red candle holders on the tables, super friendly bartenders, and waitresses. Great food and drinks. Have a Brandy Old Fashioned. I thoroughly enjoyed my cod fish fry with hashbrowns. They give you cinnamon rolls! Tiny delightful pillows of happiness."
