"This is the old school supper club of the past! It's been here since 1943 and still under the same family ownership. Get there early to enjoy an ice cream drink at the bar!"
"I would give the food a 4.5 instead of a 4 if I could. My husband had the deep fried lake perch and I had deep fried cod, we both enjoyed our meal. The breading was not too thick and it was not greasy. The fish was flaky and no “fishy” taste. Excellent creamy coleslaw and homemade tartar sauce. The rye bread was thick and hearty. We will definitely return for the fish fry. Our son had a cheeseburger and said it was good. The cheese curds were very good and my husband liked the clam chowder. The service was excellent! We were seated in, what we believe was an addition. It was a drabby carpeted room with a hole in the wall (looked intentional for maybe something being installed?) right by our table. The other main room, with hardwood floors was much nicer. The bar area has the typical supper club feel. The women’s rest room is in pretty bad shape."
"My husband and I go here when we're in the mood for a decent fish fry that doesn't have a wait time. The food is ok, but not amazing, for example, the coleslaw is bland, but the fish is good. You can't really mess up fried fish, am I right? The waitress we had this last time was so over worked and was being yelled at by the manager leaving her flustered that she tried twice to give our food to the table behind us, then forgot that tables drinks completely. Yikes! We also didn't get water until we were about to leave. We were asked if we wanted white or rye bread, and we wanted both so she brought out both, so there were some redeeming qualities. We tipped her like normal because we're not monsters. Please treat your employees better. I would also like to mention that the chairs have been the same for years, maybe a decade, so they are sunken and not very comfortable."
"Our neighborhood group goes to the Esquire quite often. The Friday night fish fry is always fun! The fried ocean perch is delicious, does not taste fishy! The fried jumbo shrimp are outstanding, so huge! They always give us generous amounts of coleslaw and bread, plus you get a baked potato or french fries. Lots of food to eat! Our server, Michelle, was very friendly and very efficient. And with 18 of us there, the service was outstanding!"
"A friend and I enjoyed an excellent dinner here last night. From the moment we walked in the door the service was outstanding. We were greeted immediately, and seated right away. We had a server who was knowledgeable and attentive. We got our drinks quickly, and they were exceptional. You are given crackers and bread sticks with a cheese dip that the chefs make. It is very good. We ordered the loaded potato skins as an appetizer and they were great. Nothing here is skimpy. We were brought out a fresh bread basket with butter and dinner salads. They make their own ranch dressing here, and I'd recommend trying it. Next, I had the best beef barley soup I have ever eaten. The beef fell apart because it was so tender...and the broth was just so mmm. My friend and I both ordered steaks. I had the filet, and it was cooked to perfection. We were stuffed, so I can't say how the desserts are. The only part of this whole dinner that lacked was the condition of the restaurant. That's why I gave "atmosphere" a score of three. The restaurant itself is pretty run down. The ceiling tiles are all stained and water damaged. A few are completely missing. The chairs we sat in were in terrible shape and the vinyl was peeling all over the place. The ceiling vents needed to be cleaned, and they seated us eye level to a plant that had mostly dead leaves on it. While I was eating, I was tempted to pluck the leaves from the plant. For such a lovely meal to be in such a dowdy surrounding was a shame. With just a few small tweaks they could make this place great. Ambiance is such a large part of the dining experience. Overall this is an excellent place to eat. I'd definitely give it a try. Great food and really good people."
