"Love coming here in the spring and fall but they only accept cash for parking. Just a heads up, there's nothing to catch in Fish Pond if you're going for a fishing trip, I'm guessing the pond dried up at some point and it hasn't been restocked since. Redfern Pond is a much more strenuous day trip but there's some decent panfish and bass as of late 2023."
"Took a very pleasant 4.5 mile (roundtrip) hike up Hunting Hollow Road in mid-May 2023. The road is a fairly wide dirt road which crossed Hunting Hollow Creek about a dozen times (!) during my hike. The water was never much deeper than ankle-deep, so one can easily cross the creek if you're willing to get your shoes wet. I imagine the water in the creek will decrease greatly in June and July. The most appealing aspects of the hike are: almost nobody there M-F, lots of wildflowers and butterflies, a few quail and wild turkeys, and a gentle slope up and down. The scenery is also quite nice - rolling hills surrounding the road, though they are rapidly browning up as the dry season continues."
"Better trails and more scenic than the Coe HQ entrance. Bowl Trail is amazing, and Wilson Peak gives great views on the way up."
"Henry Coe is just about the closest, best backpacking destination you can find for the bay area. I would strongly recommend backpacking here in spring, while the wildflowers are in bloom and before the heat kicks in. There is an endless supply of trails to possibly interesting lakes and creeks, which keeps the experience fun. In winter it tends to be a bit wet, and in the summer the heat and chaparral can be fairly unpleasant. This destination stands in as one of my staples for when the sierra are inaccessible. Watch out for ticks and poison oak."
"Parking lot is well maintained. $6.00 for all day parking. We were there to hike. We took the Jim Donnelly trail then switch to the Steer Ridge trail to loop back. It was a moderate 10 miles hike with rewarding beautiful view and especially the wild flowers."
