"Absolutely beautiful lake!! The breeze feels amazing on this June day. Great place to fish, walk, have a picnic, family day at the pavilions. The water is beautiful ❤️"
"Despite its proximity to industrial Granite City, there are several miles of wooded trails with wetland vegetation, hundreds of water fowl and even some Bald Eagles, and some well-maintained campgrounds with play equipment for kids. We even saw a Beaver lodge. It is also surprisingly nice in winter. If you live in St. Louis, try out the trails on Walker island in the middle of the lake."
"Going through Southern IL about to cross into MO. Passed a beautiful water area. Exited but couldn't get back to the place I saw. Instead I found HORSESHOE LAKE. What a great location! I sat in the shade beneath an old tree for the rest of the afternoon. There were three blue herons flying about. It was peaceful. I am sure it's a busy place normally, but that day was quiet. So glad I took the road less traveled. Yeah, I said it...."
"The horseshoe lake state park is located near highway 111 in Madison county. The lake drive in the park covering from the park boat ramp to the begining of the park trail offers an amazing view of the lake and the marsh land throughout the year. A wide variety of birds can be seen in the lake. The walkers Island contains a beautiful grassland which remains fresh and green even during the cold winter season. Although, the lake can freeze over but not completely. Therefore, it is better to check before one decides to stand on the frozen lake. Several hiking trails wandering through the park can be a great place to burn some calories. Also, there are arrangements for BBQ in different parts of the park. In addition, a beautiful view of the St. Louis skyline can be enjoyed from the park boat ramp site. Important information: -The park closes at 10 PM opening at runrise (campers can stay overnight ofcourse). -Mosquitoes can be a real problem after sunset specially by the lakeside. -Campground can be accessed only after reservation."
"Very nice lake!!! It's only 8.00 for the night! No electric or showers. There is water and a dump station. A lot of great fishing out there. You can during the day and fish on the lake or picnic lunch at the benches. We had a horrible experience with a grounds keeper there but was taken care of. Aside from that issue it was nice. Take correct cash or pay through reserve America ahead of time because no one is ever in the office."
