Guale 2 Campsite

"Stayed for 2 days 12/23 I highly recommend avoiding East Oso Loop on the way in. I towed a trailer that way and before I knew it I was in dense overhanging brush with no way to back out or turn around. The East Loop seems unmaintained. My truck and trailer came away with many heavy scratches. Take the West Oso Loop. There is a section of the road between Guale #1 and #2 with vegetation. Expect small scratches if it hasn’t been maintained in a while. The drive was not too technically difficult, but some of the hills have loose rocks and off-camber sections, and a few spots were steep uphill/downhill with big rocks in the way. High clearance is a must and 4 wheel drive may be necessary if the lowlands have had rain. It took me 3 hours to get there from Saucedo. The site itself offers fantastic views, solitude, and awesome night skies. Rocks are lined up to limit the parking area and there is a fire pit and picnic table present, but no shade."

"What they all said: the best site in the park. Amazing views, absolute solitude. We spent four days at Guale 2 and we saw or heard no one in that time. Hike the easy trail out to the edge of the lower Mesa and enjoy the diversity of plants on display. You must also admire the efforts that went into building the trail and water system; hard men back in the day. The road in has suffered some wear and erosion - definitely solid 4WD and low ratio in sections."

"Good trail and site. Will get pinstriping. Beautiful views. Site has picnic table and fire pit. No shade structure. No issues in 3/4 ton square body suburban on 33s, open diffs, no lift, no front sway bar. Just put it in 4lo and take your time."
