"It is a wonderful lake considering that it is in a desert. However, $7 per person is an excessive entrance fee."
"Such a beautiful lake while driving back from Big Bend National Park. It was truly a sight after seeing so much of mountains and deserts there. We went there around noon and it was spectacular views. Love this lake and will definitely want to visit and spend more time"
"Stopped for a night during the week, very quiet and beautiful. Our kids took a dip after a long hot day of traveling. It's a rocky lake so wear your water shoes. Our campsite had a patio, table, grill and a place for a bonfire. We saw a fox, wild pig, cranes and cows. After you pay for your space the road there is full of potholes and then becomes unpaved. Don't go past the campsites if you have an RV, the roads are not well maintained. Wouldn't have stopped if the state park had been open, we're glad we did. (No hook ups as of July 2018)"
"This is a very secluded private lake well off the beaten path, but easily accessible from I-10. You enter the lake by coming through the small almost forgotten town limits of Balmorhea (which has a few down home type accomodations, restaurant and fuel) and down a country road through some farming area.. it's a great view as you travel down that road towards the lake. When you approach there are signs posted for how to register for using the lake, even if you want to park and picnic or swim or fish it's $5/person under 15 yrs old is free RV's are $16 a day...Ok the lake is large enough for small boats but they do not allow personal motorized water craft,, sea doos and the type. The boat ramp is not paved. I had my SUP and was really excited to hit the water, I had the entire lake to myself...ahhh bliss! There is more to this place, as I spoke to a couple locals..apparently a it's a spring fed lake the water is so pure at the source it is unbelievable and that very spring irrigates the surrounding Farmland communities for hundreds of miles around..I had dropped my $5 in a envelope at the "store" I parked my rig and launched my SUP ... the water was crystal clear, cool, soft perfect. Ducks were swimming around, fish were jumping, and some cool local people were hanging out after their workday I reached the lake near sunset, and paddled for about an hour ..enjoying the beautiful sunset over the mountain. Come see this special place..it's low tech laid back country style here. Enjoy!"
