About the Business
The Newel K. Whitney Home, located at 645 Partridge Street in Nauvoo, Illinois, is a historic building that once served as the residence of Bishop Newel K. Whitney, an early Church leader. Recently acquired by the Church, the two-story structure is currently being renovated to serve as a unique family history center called the Lands and Records Office.
Visitors to the Lands and Records Office will have the opportunity to research their early Nauvoo ancestors, including those who were enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. The center offers copies of extracts from journals, diaries, and other records, as well as maps depicting property boundaries of early Nauvoo residents.
The building's restoration project includes applying brick likely made in Nauvoo in the 1840s, salvaged from a farmhouse in Farmington, Iowa. The restoration work is being carried out by full-time Church-service missionaries, with assistance from BYU students on a Semester in Nauvoo program.
Newel K. Whitney, a prominent figure in early Church history, played a significant role in the early days of the Church, providing shelter to Joseph Smith in his store in Kirtland, Ohio. The Whitney Home in Nauvoo is a testament to his legacy and the rich history of the Church in the area.
