About the Business
The US Army Medical Department Museum, located at 3898 Stanley Road in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, is dedicated to sustaining the legacy and heritage of Army Medicine. The museum educates communities on the contributions of Army Medicine to the nation's healthcare system and enhances its artifact collection. Currently closed for renovations, the museum's mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret historically significant property related to the Army Medical Department from 1775 to the present. The museum houses a wide range of medical equipment, historic uniforms, vehicles, pictures, films, and artwork showcasing the department's history.
Originally founded in 1862 as a research facility in Washington, D.C., the museum was later transferred to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and located at Walter Reed General Hospital. The U.S. Army Medical Department Museum Foundation is actively involved in expanding and modernizing the museum's exhibits and operations to provide visitors with new opportunities to explore and connect with the vibrant history of Army Medicine.
For those planning a visit, the museum's website offers information on parking, entry, and more to ensure an enjoyable experience. The AMEDD Museum Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting the museum, is separate from the U.S. Army and has no involvement in its management. While the website provides information about the museum, the views expressed are those of the Foundation, not the U.S. Army. "If you get a chance to go, please do. The museum features great military exibits and wonderful displays. Free to see. There's a few exibits that are still under development so please be respectful. It takes time to make a display that truly honors the folks in that historical event. Wheelchair friendly and mostly AC. Few areas are outside."
"Great history of AMEDD. An impressive collection of military medicine equipment and vehicles. I was the only person in the museum at the time of my visit. New exhibits currently being curated."
"A great military museum! There is a lot of history displayed here, from the 1800’s to today. I have a lot of respect for the military members in the medical field. This museum is dedicated to them and the tools they use."
"The museum is gigantic, you can easily spend a whole morning in there. Inside and outside things to see! Very well organized and well kept! The people who work there 90 are veterans! They'll know a lot about the place and have stories to share!"
"I had an absolutely awesome visit to Fort Sam Houston‘s, AMEDD museum. Ranging from the Indian wars to the more recent Middle eastern conflicts. This museum has everything about AMEDD‘s Nurse, Dental, Civilian, Veteranarian and Medical Service corps. The museum has a very wide array of tools, equipment, ambulances, medals, uniforms, if you can think of it, they probably have it. The curators are very kind and it’s worthwhile to have a chat with any of them! Many thanks to the workers of this museum for making it such a great experience!"
