"Obscure but significant Historical marker in the already commemoration-saturated Dealey Plaza. Located on western end of the seldom visited South Colonnade, this plaque marks the approximate location of the first ferry over the old channel of the Trinity River. A hugely important milestone in the development of the area in the 1840's the ferry was the first of several that would eventually cross the river from modern downtown to Dowdy's Ferry on the SE border of the county. Once you reflect on the fact that the old channel of the river ran very near this bluff (where the modern Hyatt Regency is now), standing near the edge of the bluff offers a rare glimpse into how the city was situated and the role the river played in its development. A second marker nearby commemorates Alexander and Sarah Cockrell, local pioneers connected to the later development of other ferries and, eventually, bridges across the river."
