About the Business
The Mercantile National Bank Building, also known as The Merc, is a 31-story skyscraper located at 1800 Main Street in downtown Dallas, Texas. Designed by Walter W. Ahlschlager in the Art Deco style, it was completed in 1943 and was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River at the time. The building features a unique four-sided clock tower and ornamental weather spire.
Originally the home of Mercantile National Bank, the building later became MCorp Bank. During World War II, it was the only major skyscraper constructed due to a special waiver allowing for its completion. The lobby showcases the largest Art Deco wood murals in the world.
The complex includes several buildings such as the Mercantile Securities Building and the Mercantile Dallas Building, all interconnected by tunnels and walkways. In 2005, Forest City Enterprises renovated the main tower into residential apartments with ground floor retail space. The adjacent Element building was also constructed, along with a pool and plaza for residents.
The iconic clock tower and ornamental spire serve as a landmark in downtown Dallas, with large clock faces and LED lights displaying weather information. The building has been a significant part of the city's skyline for decades, symbolizing the city's history and architectural heritage.

"The 31-story Mercantile National Bank Building is one of the historic Downtown Dallas skyscrapers. It was the only major skyscraper constructed during World War II. The 115-foot ornamental clock tower made the building the 19th tallest building in Dallas. There are four 20 ft diameter tower clocks on four sides of the clock tower and the clock hands are lighted with LEDs. Take time to stop and admire this majestic historic building while visiting Dallas Downtown."
