Freeman Pool

Freeman Pool, located at 3025 18th Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a premier institution offering American Red Cross Lifeguard Training & Recertification. Become certified and work for PARA this summer, earning $12/hr. Lifeguard Training is a five-day class where participants must attend all sessions. The first day includes a prerequisite swim from 4-8pm. Requirements include swimming 300 yards continuously, treading water for 2 minutes, and retrieving a 10lb brick from 7 feet underwater. Practice is free at any PARA pool for registered Lifeguarding Class participants.

Employment opportunities are available for certified lifeguards at Miller Center and Faucett Center. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have ARC Lifeguarding Certification. Duties include monitoring swimming areas, maintaining the pool and deck, and assisting swimmers. All applicants undergo pre-employment background checks and drug screens.

Freeman Pool also offers swim classes for different levels, including an intermediate class focusing on stroke development. The Masters Swim Program is available for adults who can freestyle 25 yards without stopping. Sessions are held throughout the year, with equipment required including a towel, swimsuit, and flip-flops.

Dr. Catalina Casaru, an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at the University of West Alabama and former Olympian, leads the swimming program. Personal trainers are contracted employees offering additional fitness services. Interested individuals can inquire about extra training packages.
