The Alabama Water Institute, located at 248 Kirkbride Lane in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a university institution at the forefront of cutting-edge water research and operations. Collaborating with partners, the institute addresses water challenges at local, regional, national, and global levels. Its mission is to conduct both innovative and applied research while training the next generation of scientists to provide solutions for a more water-secure world. The institute aims to be internationally recognized as a world-class, multidisciplinary water research center offering interdisciplinary knowledge and solutions for critical water problems. A recent initiative called Woods to Water (W2W) focuses on empowering early career scientists to understand the connections between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Members of the Alabama Water Institute recently attended the 104th Annual American Meteorological Society Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. The institute also supports research efforts through grants awarded to AWI-affiliated faculty members. In addition, researchers at the institute are working on developing a new method to quickly detect per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent environmental pollutants found in water. The Alabama Water Institute is housed at the Alabama Innovation and Mentoring of Entrepreneurs Center (AIME).
