Monumental Church 1224 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219
About the Business
Monumental Church, located at 1224 East Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia, is a historic church and tourist attraction with a poignant history. Designed by Robert Mills, America's first native-born professional architect, the church was built on the site of the tragic Richmond Theatre fire of December 26, 1811, which claimed the lives of over seventy-two people, including the governor.
The church's unique octagonal form and dome make it a standout architectural gem. The front portico features a monument inscribed with the names of the deceased from the fire. Originally serving as an Episcopal church, Monumental Church was later given to the MCV Foundation in 1965 and is now owned by Historic Richmond.
Visitors can explore the beautifully restored interior, which includes a recent paint restoration, and stroll through the grounds to appreciate the church's historical significance. Monumental Church is available for weddings and can be visited by appointment, offering a peaceful and reflective space for worship and remembrance.

"As a memorial and resting place for the dead, it is amazing. As a meeting venue, it's a bit dark. Fortunately, Historic Richmond, who owns the property, is looking for an adaptive reuse for the space. Right now it is primarily a wedding venue. I'm not sure it is open to the public at all actually, but there is a marker out front telling the history of the tragedy it memorializes, who is buried there, and who designed it. Parking is in the lot behind the state government building *directly* across the street (turn right at the light)."
"Church was not open for service or tours when I visited. The restoration on this building is super cool. I've learned about the theater fire from the podcast Stuff You Missed in History Class. It was great to visit the memorial."
"Cool architecture and a really interesting historical story!"
"Had our daughter's wedding there and it was a perfect venue. Lauren, the coordinator did a perfect job keeping everyone calm and running as planned. Adding the historic background of the church to the program gave everyone something to read before the ceremony started. Ample free parking across the street. We would recommend it."
"I am a wedding officiant. I visit quite a few wedding venues. I had the privilege of marrying a delightful couple at Monumental Church on New Year's Eve--one of the best venues I have had the privilege of visiting. The architecture is stunning and the inside of the church is a blank canvas. The wedding took place at 6:30 in the evening. Monumental has limited lighting, so the couple hired a lighting company to provide just enough lighting to give the place a warm, spiritual ambiance. The couple's florist embedded little battery operated votives in the flower arrangements. Lovely. Lynne, the wedding coordinator, was absolutely a gem to work with. Parking was not an issue, as I worried it would be.. There is after-hour parking right across the street. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a unique wedding experience."
