"We live in Florida and went to MD Anderson first for my mom’s cancer treatments. I cannot say enough great things about this place. They are amazing, efficient, respectful, reliable, personable just absolutely wonderful. Dr. Frank Fossella is phenomenal, he takes his time with his patients and is on top of caring for patients. We had to come back to Florida for the remainder of my mom’s treatments and have been so disappointed. There is a huge lack of care here in Florida especially at Moffitt. Can you guys please come show these people how it’s supposed to be done correctly?"
"I wanted to bring my mother to MD Anderson for 2nd opinion few month ago. I started the communication with them and everything seemed to be going as planned. Then we got to the financial clearance department. I was told I could not schedule an appointment until the financial clearance department had cleared my mother financially. My mom had HMO from California, so I started the process of getting authorization and approval. Finally the insurance approved the visit. But only to the MD Anderson Facility. The financial clearance department told me that BOTH the facility and physician services would need to be approved for the visit. So I went back to my mother’s insurance and after few weeks of back and forth we were not able to get the physician service approved as it was out of network. I would have to get a one time contract from my mother’s insurance for this visit and it was going to take more time. Short on time, desperate and wanting some answers I called the financial services and I inquired about paying the physician service portion of the visit out of pocket. To my astonishment they told me I can’t pay out of pocket. I told them that I will pay the whole visit out of pocket but they said I can’t. I asked why and the told me it’s the law. The law says that if you have HMO, you have to use your insurance and can’t pay out of pocket. Time was running out as this was almost 2 month of back and forth, so the solution they gave me was to cancel my mothers insurance, so that she is no longer insured, then I can pay out of pocket and be scheduled the next day. I found this absolutely ridiculous that in order to see a physician I had to cancel her insurance and I could not pay out of pocket. I left it at that and pursued other option for 2nd opinion at City of Hope. Long story short, they wasted 2 month of my time and more importantly my mothers health for this bureaucratic process. I was very disappointed as I always held MD Anderson at a higher level than this. Not only they failed me and my mother but they failed their own mission, vision and value. If I could give them zero star I would. If you are in need of 2nd option be aware of this game, there other options available and it can save your life. Do not waste your time. Look into city of hope, UC system etc. MD Anderson is not the be all and end all!"
"My sister is a care manager and taking care of people is who she is. This time it was her time to be taken care of. I personally hate hospitals as they are negative and scary, etc. BUT I am so impressed with the staff, to the call center (Sherlin & Alexis) to Sonia (nurse). Very friendly and graceful. I felt safe as am sure she did. Thank you so much. God bless you."
"Partner visited MD Anderson. Great care. Billing was an extremely suboptimal experience. The online portal stated an amount due and that claims had been submitted to insurance. Insurance had never received a claim. This persisted for months despite my partner calling MD Anderson to rectify (and being told they would by the representatives). Finally we filed a complaint w my partner’s insurance and MD Anderson appropriately submitted the claims. Two weeks after appropriately filing the claim (and when my partner logged into the portal to pay his portion), they submitted the account to collections. Do better. Have some ethics MD Anderson. You are dealing with patients who travel all over the world hearing the worst news that they have ever heard (cancer). These people don’t have the capacity to deal with this nonsense. How many people have overpaid before because they simply believed MD Anderson filed their claims correctly? This experience has reduced our trust in this institution."
