Michigan Gun Exchange

"I visited Michigan Gun Exchange on Feb 15, 2024 wanting to trade a handgun and accessories. Although there were some positive signs at the beginning of the interaction, it quickly turned into the worst gun store experience I’ve ever had. In a nutshell: Rather than behaving like a decent human being and help get clarification on what to do under unusual circumstances… Scott Igert (owner) acted in his own interest (in violation of several laws, in my opinion). He willfully and intentionally put me in violation of state law, seemingly to spite me. He then trespassed me for no good reason, again probably just to spite me. I was quoted what l perceived to be a fair trade value for my items, and said yes to the offer planning to use the amount agreed upon towards the purchase of a new handgun there. Scott Igert then transferred my firearm into the FFLs possession BEFORE MY BACKGROUND CHECK CAME BACK and WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE AND CONSENT! Furthermore, I wasn’t provided with documentation of any kind that day… no Firearms Sales Record (RI-060), no receipt/invoice. As I understand it, these are required by state law. Effectively, Scott Igert stole my gun and provided no proof that a legal consensual transaction had occurred. Unfortunately, in that moment I didn't know what to do about it other than hope he would honor the agreement, so I left empty handed. I returned on Feb 23, the Brady Law date (perform a lawful transfer after a federally-mandated period of 3 business days without additional response from NICS). I again asked if we could do the RI-060 form for my traded gun, and again was told "no need to" and was instead given a generic invoice with my old gun’s Make, Model, & Serial Number (oddly, the invoice dollar amounts were all zeroed out). However, once the transaction was finally completed, I did receive a sales receipt for the overall purchase which itemized my trade-in total value as a “cash” payment. Per Michigan State Police - Firearms Division: "It is the [firearm] seller’s responsibility to complete Form RI-060 and turn it in to your local police department within 10 days, under penalty of state civil infraction." Scott Igert eventually relented (but only AFTER I had to involve the county sheriff). He only gave me the seller's copy. "Because you decided to throw a fit … I'll be dropping off the other copy at the sheriff's office … Don't come back here ever again... You've been trespassed … You're on audio [recording]... Get the f*** out right now!" Scott Igert should know better, as he is a former/retired police officer. One would assume his integrity would be higher than average. Evidently not. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH MICHIGAN GUN EXCHANGE!"
