About the Business
Niiwin Akeaa Community Center, located at 111 Beartown Road in Baraga, Michigan, is a vital institution within the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Our members come together to celebrate our heritage and work towards a prosperous future as a unified community.
We prioritize protecting the sovereignty of our tribe, fostering economic growth, and ensuring self-sufficiency to preserve our way of life for generations to come. Our daily actions are guided by the values of our ancestors, with a focus on benefiting the next seven generations of our tribe.
The Eagle at the center of our logo symbolizes strength and healing, while the circular shape represents unity and resilience. The inclusion of the date Dec. 17, 1936, marks the approval of the KBIC Constitution and Bylaws by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Seven sun rays are a nod to the seven generations and teachings of the Ojibwe culture.
The KBIC, part of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians, spans both sides of the Keweenaw Bay Peninsula in Baraga County, Michigan. Our community serves members in several counties and is rooted in the treaty of 1854. The KBIC L’Anse Reservation, established under this treaty, is the oldest and largest reservation in Michigan. Join us at Niiwin Akeaa Community Center to learn, grow, and support one another as we continue to thrive as a community.
