"I recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at the Getaway Cabin, and it was nothing short of a disappointment. From start to finish, our getaway was marred by a series of issues that made our stay far from enjoyable. First and foremost, the door code provided to us did not work. We had to use a key for the remainder of the trip since the battery of the door was dead. Once we finally entered the cabin, we were greeted with an unpleasant sight. The cleanliness of the cabin left much to be desired. The cabin was dusty, and it was evident that the surfaces hadn't been properly cleaned in quite some time. There was hair on the walls of the shower and about 30 or so dead ants throughout the cabin. It was disheartening to see such a lack of attention to detail in maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for guests. Furthermore, the cabin itself showed a significant amount of wear and tear. The furniture was worn out and uncomfortable, and it was evident that the property had not been well-maintained. This lack of upkeep significantly detracted from the overall appeal of the getaway. I must also highlight another significant drawback of the Getaway Cabin we were assigned. The cabin we were given was situated close to a main road. This unfortunate placement meant that throughout our stay, we were subjected to the noise of passing cars and the headlights of vehicles at night. It was incredibly disappointing to find that the cabin's location did not offer the seclusion and tranquility that is typically associated with a getaway in nature. Lastly, we were charged for provisions that we did not use. During our stay we used one fire starter. We were charged for two fire starters as well as four coffees, we were only provided with four coffees packets for the entire stay, none of which were used. In conclusion, our experience at the Getaway Cabin was marred by a series of issues that rendered our getaway far from relaxing or enjoyable. From the door code mishap to the uncleanliness, wear and tear, and questionable billing, it is clear that this cabin does not live up to the standards one would expect when seeking a peaceful retreat."
"This is our 2nd getaway experience since Starved Rock. Location is a little further away for us, close enough to South Haven where there're food options and grocery (Meijer, Aldi) to stock up items. Cabin sites are tugged away from main roads, secluded enough for any traffic although you could still hear fainted trains passing by at times. Surrounded by maple, oak and pine trees, cabins aren't too close to each in other, although during winter when trees are bare you possibly could see your neighboring units. Our stay "Victory" is mostly nice, but the heating unit gives out hissing sounds during its warmup cycle that one time it woke us up during sleep and we decided to turn off heat completely, as it was still warm at night for a small cabin. We went to Black River Preserve for our nature walk with kids, a pretty easy trail for family. Other than the heater situation, it was mostly as expected, all of us had fun grilling and making s'mores."
"No frills, but you can't beat the view. It's almost disturbingly quiet. Bed is super comfortable, they had everything you need to cook and/or build a fire. My only complaint is that they'll don't have a dishrack."
"We found a lot of bugs in our cabin, several crawling around the mattress and some large flying ants. We didn’t stay long enough to do a thorough inspection, but I spotted coffee stains on the table. We notified Getaway of these issues, but because it was already 9pm, and the kids were exhausted, we decided to go to a hotel. Four days later, we got an email from Getaway, but nothing before that. This was our second Getaway experience. At our first stay, in Starved Rock, we arrived to find that the cabin had not been cleaned prior to our arrival. The sheets had not been changed and had blood stains, the supplies had not been replenished, and the fire was still smoking. We alerted Getaway at that time, and after about a half hour, and two phone calls, someone came out and fixed up the cabin. Getaway will work for a person who is looking for a no-frills, camping-type experience. It is not like a hotel or a vacation rental (although it is priced that way). The cabins are extremely small–to the point that if someone needs to walk to the bathroom, everyone else needs to move to the bed to get out of the way. If you’re staying with kids in the top bunk, be prepared for them to bump their heads a lot because the ceiling clearance is extremely low. Also know that Getaway charges for anything extra (like $2 for a packet of coffee). We decided after this experience that Getaway is not right for us, as a family with young kids. The combination of bugs, poor maintenance, slow response from management, and little recourse if something goes wrong just does not work for us. If your alternative is rugged tent camping, though, this will probably seem like a palace."
