"Today’s adventure was not what I had originally planned. I had really wanted to check out the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary but made the mistake of just assuming they would be open. They were not. So I did a quick look see of nearby trails and found the MSU Kellog Experimental forest. Bonus it also has part of the North Country Trail so I got my first ever little taste of that. There are several trails here . I did some of the NCT and some of the west side trails. There are some good hills here and lots of options. I met the nicest fellow hiker Dave along the way and we hiked together for a brief time while he gave me some history and suggested some route options that I was happy to have. Access to the Lemmien Loop is directly across 42nd street from the gravel parking lot. There is a short scenic trail that leads to a footbridge which crosses Augusta Creek. Follow the red blazes. The NCT is the longest National Scenic Trail covering 4,700 miles through eight states. A portion of the trail makes its way through Kellogg Forest and offers views of upland forests and riparian areas along Augusta Creek. Follow the blue paint blazes. The west side of Kellogg Forest is also open for you to enjoy during posted hours. This area does not have marked trails, offers steeper topography, and tends to be more challenging than the Lemmien Loop. Established on abandoned agricultural land, the 716-acre Kellogg Experimental Forest is known worldwide for research on tree breeding and genetics, planting techniques, and plantation establishment and management. The forest is open to the public for biking, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing, and has several interpretive trails. Dogs are allowed on leash. Kid friendly. Not handicap accessible. No facilities."
"Absolutely beautiful out here! I went here recently for the first time in too long, and it brought back great memories! I love the bridge in the beginning that has all the displays and signs. The trails here are very nice, and this place is just full of wildlife! MSU has done a great job with this place!"
"Beautiful forest but people don’t pick up after their dogs. My family left with dog poop all over the bottoms of our shoes."
"There are so many trails to discover! You can walk all day and not see another hiker."
"Offers opportunities for pretty hikes. My family enjoys visiting during maple syrup production in the Spring."
