"Just spoke to one of the former lifeguards. Apparently the people in charge fill out the employment forms for the young lifeguards. They tell them take care of it, and then sign them up as independent contractors, allowing them to be paid 3.50 a hour, and they are now allowed to work 12 hour shifts if they are 15 years old (rather than the 2 hours which is the law). At the end of the year they send them a 1099 form to fill out as an independent contractor. So if you see a young lifeguard at the pool, there is a chance they may have been conned into working long shifts at 3.50 a hour. (Which they then have to pay taxes on bc they are independent contractors)."
