"My husband and I have been coming to shands for over 14 years. We travel 3 hours to get here. Currently here now because my husband had his arm amputated. The quality of care at Shands has decreased immensely. The hospital is DISGUSTING! The floors are absolutely filthy. The rooms are disgusting. How can a “top notch” facility like Shands fall so far?? If it weren’t for the fact that my husband surgeon works out of this hospital. I would never come back to it! Just so heart broken. This hospital came so highly recommended years ago and now it is an absolute dump. The cooks on the 3rd floor terrace holding their pants up while handling food! Very sad!! Also John from transport what a jerk!! Was so abrupt. Kicking the breaks on the bed like it was a football, when my husband was being transported from recovery after having his arm amputated. He should be fired. Terrible attitude!"
"My friend drove his girlfriend almost 2 hrs to go to this specific terrific teaching hospital because her GP doctor referred her due to a fast growing mass in her mandible! She was turned away saying she owed them money and sent home told to call the following week ! No pmt arrangements were even considered! This hospital needs to be sued PEROID !"
"I had to have emergency surgery, the ER I went to was kanapaha, it was awesome. The transfer to the main ER was a smooth transition. However when I arrived at the main Shands ER, the staff was not helpful, the EMTs were the ones to wipe down a bed and put sheets on that bed so I could have somewhere to lay down, the ER room I was placed in was dirty, so I was afraid to get up and touch anything. When my husband arrived and went to put my things down I told him not to because the room was dirty. A housekeeper finally came in hours later to clean the room, the consulting surgeon even made a comment about there being blue jelly like substance in a basin, and said make sure you ask someone to clean that up, since we don't know what it was used for, my husband asked for it to be removed and he was told to just throw it in the trash. After I was admitted that's where the real care started, the nurses and cnas that assisted me were really helpful and understanding, specially the 6th floor nursing/cnas. They were absolutely the best, and made up for the lack concern in the er. SAN made my day! He will make an awesome nurse someday."
"I went to emergency room at my cardiologists advise. Waited 12hrs in the emergency room with angina issues. Was finally seen and was decided to admit and do heart catheter on the Monday cause was a sat. I have unstable angina which is very serious. I was put in a busy hallway for hrs waiting for a room. I was sent to an observation unit was very stressed from being up whole night previously and all night in emergency. I don't even think I made 12hrs in the unit when a dr comes in at 7pm the same day to tell me they were releasing me as they felt I could get test through my cardiologist and there were more people in worse condition that needed the test more. Went through 2 days of torment one 24 hrs before going that 24hrs with Shands. I tried to discuss with the Dr my serious concerns concerning all but just didn't care!!! The fact that I live a good 30min from any hospitals. Didn't care was like talking to a wall. She told me her team made this decision. The nurse told her my vitals and pulse were fluctuating all day going down to 50 she wasn't concerned didn't care. I've been to advent hospital in tbe past and never experienced the lack of organization and lack of caring as I did at this facility!!!!"
"I can not say enough good things about this hospital. I've had two stays with them. The first time, they saved my life. The second time, they gave me my life back. From doctors to the housekeepers, everybody is kind, caring, and professional. The nurses are exceptional. This is how a hospital should function. I live in Ft. Lauderdale and go here for my procedures. That should tell you something."
