Shrimp Shack 1929 Sea Island Parkway, Saint Helena Island, SC 29920

"I was surprised when asked to write a review. I don't know I never did before. I first went to the Shimp Shack in 1991. It was outstanding. It was literally a shack of a building in the owner's front yard. The only thing you need to order is the shrimp burger, which is as it sounds. It is ground up shrimp, very lightly breaded, cooked, and put on a hamburger bun. Add their homemade coctail sauce and it is perfection. Every time I return to the Lowcountry, I go out of my way to visit the Shrimp Shack, which is much larger than a shack now. It is still just as good. On this last visit, I took my children for the first time, expecting them to think the idea of ground up shrimp was icky. They tried it. They loved it. They wanted to go back for lunch the following day. Remember to bring cash. They don't do plastic. While you are at it, continue to Hunting Island State Park. It completes a great day trip to the islands."

"This place has a mystique about it, so I had to try. They have limited hours and are cash only... and people still come... so I figured it had to be great. The namesake product of shrimp was the best part of my meal, and just an ok portion size. The shrimp were really good. The red rice tasted like ketchup on rice with one piece of onion and one piece of meat. The French fries were cooked properly and were good, but I didn't go there for the fries. The hush puppies were not to my liking, greasy and not much flavor. All in all, it's not a place I'll be returning to l."

"It's definitely a shack. Typical fried seafood. Tender and not overcooked. Do know that it is cash only (I didn't inquire about their check option). No more onion rings or sweet potato fried (July 2023)."
