"Starting at either Patriots Point or downtown Charleston, you take a roughly half hour boat ride to Fort Sumter while a volunteer gives you a little history of the location. I'm not sure if there is someone to do that all the time, though. Once there, you can go to the little museum that's inside or walk around the fort to lots of labeled spots. It's a neat history lesson, with a lot of reading (so be forewarned if you have little ones). If you go on the last tour of the day, they lower the flag and have volunteers fold it, which was a nice touch. That is probably where we got the most information. You only have an hour to tour the area, which my husband and I agreed was definitely not enough time. But with the high cost of entry (almost $40 per person), I don't think we'll be returning to catch what we missed. I recommend that if you choose to do this tour, go with the mindset that you need to be focused and fast as soon as you get there. This is not conducive to a leisurely perusal. There is a small "museum" of sorts and a gift shop back at their dock downtown, so don't waste time with the shop in the fort."
"I'm not sure what the reason behind it is but there's a 30 minute ferry ride to the island to spend an hour on what one really needs two hours to explore before the 30 minute ferry ride back. That's my only negative. The captain of the ferry was informative and it was neat after learning the history of the fort to see the other forts upstream. There's a museum on the island that you need to budget at least 20 minutes for."
"Went out on a chilly but beautiful day! The Ranger on the fort was a great storyteller and the fort was a great place to reflect on the bravery and dedication. Impressive in every way. Nice boat ride to the fort also!"
"The ferry ride out to Fort Sumter was great. The staff were pleasant and friendly. Keep an eye out though because we almost missed the dolphins. Lots of fun and history, sediment would recommend to for all ages"
"Perfect from start to finish. Easy to find and board the ferry. Ranger gave a great narration to the site. We had 1 hr to explore and look at museum. The flag raising happens if you do the first ferry of the day. This was a bucket list item and I'm very happy with how the day went."
