"I feel incredibly fortunate to have my son attending Montessori Discovery School. He is my third child to attend the school. I’ve researched and observed alternative pre-school options, both in the Syracuse area and in other states, and I have no doubt that MDS is the perfect environment for my son. The teachers at MDS create the ultimate environment for learning and maturing through these very important pre-school years. My older children still display many attributes that I know were cultivated through their Montessori education. One of my favorite things about MDS is the open classroom where the younger children have the chance to observe and admire the older children’s work and accomplishments, while the older children are afforded the opportunity to be leaders and role models for the their younger classmates. Communication with the director is easy and straightforward. Five stars for sure!"
"Our experience at MDS wasn't what we expected or hoped for. The program was presented in a manner that learning would be child led with structured guidance from the teachers. We feel this to be the contrary. The predominate attitude seems to be one of no bend, little patience and do it my way. We don't believe that this is nurturing or giving a child a chance to grow and adjust at such a young age. The head teacher comes across as not being confident but degrading and arrogant. An attempt may be made to strong arm you into a decision that isn't in the best interest of your child. If your child should have an issue during the course of the day they will be pulled from the line during student dismissal. This will occur in a manner for all parents and students to see. Decisions can be made about your child without your complete notification until after the fact. During the one parent teacher conference the negative is highlighted with little focus on the positive. The pictorial presentation is not a progression of your child's work, but brief snapshots in a day. It is our belief that structure is an essential part in educating a child. However, to go overboard may damage a child in a way that may take years to repair. We thank God that our child is currently in a school that is nurturing, structured and gives a child a chance to learn and love school. Alarm bells should go off for any parent that has to wait a month before you can make a scheduled, fifteen minute, observation. Don't get hooked on the Montessori name and take time to investigate the accreditation of this school. Money and the number of siblings matter with this program. We rated this school a one because we strongly disliked it and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Use extreme caution if applying."
"Montessori Discovery School is a dream come true. I have two small boys with very different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses who are both thriving in this wonderful school. The teachers and director maintain a nurturing atmosphere where children choose their own work (using Montessori materials), while still receiving guidance. The expectation that they will respect each other and their school is clear, and fosters independence and responsibility. The classroom hums with the most orderly excitement imaginable for a room full of 3-6 yr olds. My kids love school so much that they started requesting "school days" in mid-July. Communication between the school and parents is excellent. It is obvious that everyone that works there very much cares about and understands children. I am so happy we found MDS, and would give it the highest recommendation."
