Robert Montemurro, M.D.

"I didn't know much about endometriosis when I had my surgery with Dr Montemurro, but now that I do, I am appalled at the treatment I received. He performed an open surgery on me (instead of laparoscopic) because he said my cyst was "too big" to remove laparoscopically. I've spoken to numerous surgeons since then who said that was a red flag and completely untrue. After my surgery, he told me that I did NOT have endometriosis, because he "took it all out". I know now after my research that this is impossible, as he did not perform excision surgery which is the gold standard of treatment for endo. He did an ablation and removed the cyst. By the very diagnosis he gave me (endometrioma cyst) I actually had Stage 4 endometriosis. His incorrect diagnosis resulted in a delay in seeing an endometriosis specialist after the surgery, someone he should have referred me to immediately after surgery for the right care. The follow-up was even worse. I had a similar experience to another reviewer regarding his bedside manner. He rubbed his hand on my bare thigh, in front of my husband, and said that I would be back in a "string bikini" in no time (referring to the scarring on my stomach). He also said that I had to refrain from sex, but "not oral" for at least 6 weeks, and chuckled. When I went for my second follow-up there, he spoke to me from the door, literally one foot out the door, I felt rushed and was not given a chance to ask any of the questions I had. He also gave me conflicting and confusing advice. Lastly, his advice on conceiving was to "try for a year, and if nothing happens come back and see me". Given my age (36) and the severity of the endometriosis, this is the wrong advice. At most trying to conceive naturally for 6 months and in the meantime seeking fertility advice/treatment is the most appropriate recommendation for someone in my condition, as infertility is directly linked to endometriosis."

"He did a great job on the exam I believe, but then, I'm not a doctor so I wouldn't know. I did have some issues with his bedside manner, hence my one star review. I thought about not saying anything, because it's so much easier to just move on, but maybe someone out there is looking him up to see if he is reputable, so here I am. Right before the exam, he rested his hand on my leg to talk to me, and I found that to be way too personal, especially since I had no clothing on. While he was doing my breast exam, he told me I should smile more. It is such a small detail but at the same time, incredibly invasive and just strange to say in that particular situation. He seemed nice outside of all that and gave me great information about BV and how to avoid it, and all that. But how you interact with patients is also important and based on my experience I would not go back."
