"I’m a 36 year old woman who was diagnosed with fibroids in 2019. What I have surprisingly found throughout this process (and hopefully it was just specific to my experience) is that if someone hasn’t personally been diagnosed with fibroids and/or knows someone who has had them, there is a huge lack of awareness about what they are (even in the medical world). I myself ignored them at first after hearing the word “benign,” assuming it was not something to be concerned about and that if they did cause any issues, I would deal with them at that point. That being said, my symptoms were vague and didn’t overtly point to the fibroids. I had terrible back pain for years, digestive issues, frequent urination and ultimately, bloating and pressure in my abdomen that lead to me being unable to work at my full capacity towards the end. I emphasize all of that because this entire process was very arduous, with many doctors overlooking the root cause, and had true difficulty finding a professional who would be able to help me in the way I needed. After seeing one doctor who's style was a bit too assertive for me at the time, being referred to several others who didn’t specialize in fibroids, trying to schedule appointments (unsuccessfully) with 2 more doctors, and then re-doing my research to expand my locale, I found Dr. Liberman. I truly can’t express how grateful I am that my search landed on him. I’m not someone who typically needs incredible bedside manner. However, at this stage in my life, and because the issues I was dealing with involved a host of other potential life-changing decisions, he was exactly the professional I needed. My largest fibroid was 11cm and weighed 1.5 lbs. Because of how large the fibroid was, there were no guarantees about whether or not a myomectomy could be performed, or if a hysterectomy would have to be done. I was being confronted with decisions about children, IVF, etc. that I just wasn’t prepared for. I had to put my trust in this doctor that he would do what was best for me, taking all of these factors into account. I went into the surgery knowing, and giving my full consent, that he would have to make most of his decisions once I was on the table. Ultimately, he was able to achieve the myomectomy. My recovery was so smooth that I felt better immediately after the surgery and recognized the differences in just a few days. In the past week (I’m about 5 weeks into my recovery), I’ve begun feeling like myself again, which in some ways, I haven’t been able to say in years. Pain in women's reproductive health is assumed to be inherent. I’ve always adhered to the motto that you have to work hard to feel good, and you sometimes have to tolerate aspects of pain in your life. I implore other women to not take this mindset to an extreme. Chronic pain isn’t normal and affects you both physically and mentally. Dr. Liberman, his office staff, the hospital nurses, and everyone involved helped guide me through an experience when I was most vulnerable. It isn’t easy to allow yourself to be that way amongst complete strangers (or anyone for that matter), but they made it simple. They did the job that needed to be done with my welfare at the forefront. I cannot recommend them more highly."
