Sandy Run Boathouse
About the Business
Located along the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Virginia, Sandy Run Boathouse is a popular tourist attraction that serves as the area's scholastic rowing facility and racecourse. The facility features three boathouses and a 2,000 meter Class A racecourse, providing a venue for rowing crew education, training, and competitions. While the park is generally not open to the public, spectators are permitted for regattas. However, alcohol, propane/grilling/open flames, and pets are not allowed on regatta days.
During certain times of the year, the park has specific restrictions in place, such as being closed from December 1st until January 31st and having cold weather restrictions when the air temperature is below 40 degrees. Additionally, from February 1st through March 31st, adult rowers may take out certain types of boats with restrictions.
In addition to rowing activities, Sandy Run Boathouse also offers Climb UPton, the largest ropes course in the Mid-Atlantic, with 90 different elements and three levels of difficulty. The institution also hosts nature summer camps and provides opportunities for summer jobs. For more information and to book cabins or camping at nearby regional parks, visitors can contact the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.

"Went to head of Occoquan, lovely location, bring your walking shoes!"
"Gorgeous venue on a Fall weekend. HOTO is so well organized! Grandstand location however is neither wheelchair accessible nor is the hiking trail to it from the Boathouse straight or intuitive. Hang out near Boathouse to get best feel for the event and to experience terrific food trucks and apparel vendors."
"Great location for crew/rowing competitions or just to do by yourself. It’s a decent walk so be prepared. But a beautiful location to be on the water or be a spectator."
"Terrible. Regatta was disorganized, parking was ridiculously expensive ($10 per person per trip from South HS). No clear walking paths and no places to set up team tents that were on even ground. Not family or disabilities friendly."
"We came to Sandy Run to watch our daughter race in a regatta. First, for this specific regatta (and I think for many others), you can't park on site but park in a high school lot nearby and are shuttled over. The parking lot on site is reserved for coaches so be mindful of that set up. Your rowing organization should give you specifics about the parking and drop off protocols. We didn't realize there would be a small hike involved getting from the drop off area to the spectator area so that is important to keep in mind if you're coming to attend a regatta. The trail has ups and downs and plenty of roots--very natural and raw--so it's not friendly for folks with mobility issues. There was a road that wound down directly to the spectator area, but I'm not sure if you have to secure special permission ahead of time to use that road to drop off anyone with mobility issues. You definitely want to wear sneakers. The park is beautiful and the trail to get to the spectator area winds around the river so it's very scenic, especially on a sunny day. At the spectator area, there is stadium style wooden seating as well as open ground space where you can use folding chairs. There is an installed bathroom set up so it's not a porto-potty situation. There's also a snack bar set up and I would advise also bringing food to eat in a cooler as it's not easy or quick to leave to go grab anything."
