Reviews of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine
"Dr. Winter is fantastic. I have been searching for the cause of my symptoms for over 2 years now - I was not confident sleep was the cause, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to get a PSG. Study indicated I have mild OSA as well as severe PLMS. As the PLMS was more severe than the OSA, Dr. Winter wanted to treat that before going the CPAP route. However, I have had bad experiences with dopamine promoting drugs and asked if we could try CPAP in conjunction with the medicine as I was not necessarily comfortable taking the medication by itself. The office was happy to let me give CPAP a go - they have contacted the DME to jumpstart the process. In short, Dr. Winter was sympathetic and allowed me to go with a treatment I was more comfortable with. He also helped me find the cause of debilitating symptoms that was ruining my quality of life. I am thankful for an answer and am excited to start treatment!"
"Dr Winter has been my doctor for about 12 to 15 years. I have a severe case of RLS. He has always been very patient and and on top of whatever my situation is at the time. Most people think RLS is just the figgits but in my case its total pain. He and his staff have gone out of their way to see that my meds were correct and most importantly working for me. I appreciate his understanding and knowledge of this disease, Wouldnt change a thing! Thanks Doc!!"
"I was referred to Dr. Winter by PCP with the hope of getting help with my sleep problem. What a total waste of time! Rather than listening to me, he never stopped talking and told me that all I have to do is buy his book and stay up late at night and then I will sleep just fine. I felt insulted by the way disrespectful manner in which he spoke to me, almost ridiculed for creating this sleep problem for myself. I have never felt so belittled by a doctor. To be a sleep doctor, this one has no bedside manner whatsoever!"
"I thought Dr. Winter was better than most but after I had my at home sleep test, he told me I did not have apnea and there was no need to worry about dying in my sleep. Later I was confused because I had "events" during the sleep test and so I asked what the events were. They were apnea. I just didn't have enough to qualify for insurance to cover it and to be labeled as apnea. He didn't explain the nuances in that. He also dismissed my need for extra sleep when there are people who need more than the normal amount. He phrased it as being weird that an adult woman would need at least ten hours. So I felt invalidated. I have apnea accompanied with panic sometimes which disturbs my sleep which is part of the reason I sleep more. He didn't seem to understand how that would affect me. I am disappointed that he stuck by a model of diagnosis used by insurance companies. He didn't understand how having panic in your sleep could affect you. And just because I'm not falling asleep doesn't mean that being tired AF all the time is a normal experience. Also they are charging me $900 6 months after my last visit with no bills in that amount before. In response to your response - so it's ok to lie to a patient about what's really going on because it fits insurance parameters? That is not care."
"I thought everyone fell asleep at the theater! Once I was struggling to drive for longer than 5 minutes without snoozing, I realized there was something else going on, but never dreamed I had sleep apnea. Dr Winter set me up with a CPAP, and 18 months later, I wouldn't be without it. At first it was great just to be able to stay awake doing normal things. Now, I'm feeling like a completely different person, and so much healthier. (I also have to thank Charlottesville Family Medicine for the referral!) Thank goodness there are specialists who recognize and treat this serious condition. A wholehearted thank you to Dr Winter and his team."
