"Google pointed me to The Pie Place when I searched for a coffee shop. The young girl behind the counter could not answer even the most simple question. (How many shots of espresso do you put in a large latte.) One of the other ladies working had to come out of the back to answer my question and to actually make my drink. Then the younger girl touched my pastry with her bare hands after putting it into a plastic container. She actually opened the container in order to touch my food. On a positive note, the pastry and the latte were both delicious."
"On short notice we needed a raisen pie. They were able to accomodate the request and it was still warm when picked up. It made our boss very happy and it was one of the best he had ever had! Everything is always so good from there."
"Best pie in Pittsburgh and - I’ll go ahead and say it - best I have ever had! The cherry was my favorite for years, then I had had fruit of the forest and it is offering strong competition. I wish I could eat these pies every day."
"I struggle with how I feel about the Pie Place. Why? The inconsistency of their pies--and I've probably tried them all over the years. I can buy the same pie on multiple occasions & it's never the same. I'm sometimes disappointed by a pie I loved before. I adore their cream pies--lemon meringue & chocolate are amazing but my favorite is the banana cream pie, hands down. Their cherry pie is *mostly* great. I've bought one for a party that absolutely did not have sugar added & was so unbearably tart that it was inedible. I agree with other reviews that the blueberries are tough & off-putting, a texture similar to frozen berries. I tried the forest fruit pie for the 2nd time last week & the tough blueberries and hard peaches have me convinced this is not the pie for me. I ordered a lemon meringue pie this past weekend & the meringue was done in a lattice fashion which left a lot of uncovered lemon curd & tough meringue that it was difficult to slice through. I swear I've bought lemon meringue here with mounds of perfect meringue topped with twists of lemon slices. Their crust can perfectly complement a well filled pie, but overpower when it's too thick. It's *usually* bland & heavy rather than flaky & light. With that said, I clearly enjoy this place because I get a few pies monthly, typically for holidays, dinner parties or birthdays. I've had some of their desserts--crisps, brownies, small pies (more crust, less filling--just get an entire pie) & bars. They are good portions but the prices are a bit higher, comparatively, but these are clearly made in house (you can watch them working). You can also have parties or attend classes here, pre-COVID & friends have really enjoyed those experiences. Staff are usually very pleasant. They have a fairly impressive menu is espresso drinks. ETA: OK, I think I've finally been disappointed for the last time. I bought my beloved banana pie (pictured) this weekend and it was totally disappointing. It was beautifully decorated with a perfectly flaky crust but the custard was flavorless. The banana slices were basically non-existent at the bottom of the pie. The banana was unpleasantly sour/salty from whatever it's treated with to prevent browning. The pie absolutely did not taste like banana cream. Given the repeatedly inconsistent quality of their pies, it's hard to justify the $18+ per pie, especially as often as I get them. I've adjusted my rating accordingly. This is disheartening because I've loved them so over the past 3 years."
"We bought a four pack of fruit tarts and an oatmeal raisin cookie. The tarts were fabulous - simple and delicious. The cookie was good, but was the crunchy kind - not my favorite but the flavor was still spot on. Would go again. Thank you for being open Christmas Eve."
