The Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center, located at 1377 R Street Northwest in Washington, D.C., is a historic institution that has been a beacon of hope for LGBTQ communities nationally and residents of the greater D.C. area. Since its opening in 1993, the center has provided stigma-free healthcare and legal services, especially during the AIDS epidemic. The iconic ETMC building is undergoing redevelopment to create a mixed-use space that will include an LGBTQ inclusive cultural center, office space for Whitman-Walker, retail, and residential space. The redevelopment project, set to be completed in 2019, is a re-commitment to Whitman-Walker's mission of providing affirming health and wellness services to the community. The center continues to care for 26 percent of people living with HIV in the district, and creative funding streams like the redevelopment project are crucial to supporting its patients.
