Ansco Lofts
About the Business
The Ansco Lofts is a historic mixed-use building located at 16 Emma Street in Binghamton, New York. With 100 modern luxury lofts and commercial space, the Ansco Lofts is just minutes away from Downtown Binghamton, Binghamton University's Johnson City campus, and United Health Services Johnson City campus. Named after the famous camera company that operated within the building for over 40 years, the Ansco Lofts is a symbol of Binghamton's industrial heritage from the 20th century.
The rehabilitation of this historic site represents a new beginning for one of the county's most prominent industrial assets. The Ansco Camera Factory building showcases a viable path towards continued positive growth for Binghamton in the 21st century. The lofts at Ansco offer sophistication and luxury at a size that will fit any budget.
The history of Ansco is rich and impactful, as the company was the first manufacturer of photographic materials and a global leader in the camera industry. From supplying the US Government with the first photographs for any purpose to making advancements in film and photography technology, Ansco made a significant mark on the world.
Despite facing challenges such as competition with Kodak during the Great Depression and government seizure during wartime, Ansco continued to innovate and produce award-winning products. The company's commitment to its employees and the community was evident through the establishment of employee benefits programs and the creation of Ansco Lake, a recreation retreat for employees.
As the company's focus shifted and global competition increased, Ansco eventually withdrew from the consumer photography and film industries, leading to the closure of the iconic 6 Emma Street location. The Ansco trademark was later sold to a Hong Kong-based company, marking the end of an era for the historic brand.
The Ansco Lofts serve as a reminder of Binghamton's industrial past and a testament to the city's resilience and growth. With modern amenities and a nod to its historic roots, the Ansco Lofts offer a unique living experience in a vibrant and evolving community.

"Edit 5/23/23 (Finally moving out): I lived here for 3 years total. For the first two years, I lived in a one bedroom and had almost no issues. There were some things that I didn't necessarily like but the minimal issues were tolerable to live with. In May 2022, I moved into a new apartment, and from the start there were issues. First, upon entering the apartment there were ants everywhere. Also, surfaces, including floors, and countertops, were sprinkled with black dust/soot that made our socks black, and would rain down on our clothes, bedding, pillows, rugs, and furniture until the ceiling gaps were finally caulked a few months later (Management later confirmed that this was a problem in multiple apartments, and can also be seen in the building's gym). Also, toe kick tiles were falling off, the grout in the shower was coming out (Also a building wide issue per maintenance), and paint was flaking off the walls, exposing flaking lead paint (Which they tried to tell us was merely a cosmetic issue, as if lead paint is not toxic. I therefore reached out to the Broome County Health Department). Additionally, our bedroom window did not open for the first few months of us living there. These were all issues BEFORE we moved in. My main issue is not necessarily the occurrence of these issues but really that management was aware of these issues and did absolutely nothing to fix them before we moved in and then, made us feel like it was our fault for not informing them. We also had our A/C break during the summer and a major leak in our roof. Eight months passed (and hundreds of emails later) and we finally settled all the issues in the apartment. We then wanted to renew our lease as we thought we have suffered for 8 months but were finally in the clear of living in a tolerable apartment. But, management told us that we could not renew our lease and gave us a reason that did not make sense, and made us ONLY communicate with their lawyer about renewing our lease. We did absolutely nothing wrong, but were denied renewing our lease, we believe because we spoke out about the issues in our apartment. We did reach out to a lawyer and they said that our case of landlord retaliation would be really easy to prove, but we decided to cut our losses and never have to deal with Paulus Development ever again. Without being too dramatic, the last year I lived in this building was an absolute nightmare. If I could give this zero stars I would."
"Management here is quite unresponsive. I have gone weeks trying to contact them about issues with my unit with no success. I have also been lied to about the safety of my unit in regards to flaking lead based paint and a mysterious black dust that would fall from the ceiling throughout my unit. There aren't many good options for upscale apartments around here but I would rule out Ansco Lofts- along with the developer's other building the EJ Victory Lofts"
