Ponemah Bog Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Amherst, New Hampshire, is a 75-acre park and tourist attraction that offers a unique glimpse into the natural history of the area. The sanctuary features a three-acre pond surrounded by a floating sphagnum mat and upland oak-pine woods, creating a diverse ecosystem that is home to a variety of plant and animal species.
Named after the "land of the hereafter" from Longfellow's "Hiawatha," Ponemah Bog is a living museum that showcases the changes that have taken place over the last 12,000 years. Visitors can explore the narrow boardwalk trails that lead to viewing platforms offering panoramic views of the bog and its surroundings.
The sanctuary is home to a mix of northern and southern plant species, including spruce, pitcher plants, and sundew. The bog's acidic peat creates a unique environment that supports a simple food web, with limited nutrients available to grazing animals and their predators.
Visitors are encouraged to follow the marked trails and respect the fragile ecosystem by refraining from collecting or disturbing plants and animals. Only foot travel is permitted within the sanctuary, and pets are not allowed for their safety and the safety of the bog.
Ponemah Bog offers a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts and a valuable outdoor classroom for those interested in wetland botany and ecology. With its rich history and diverse plant life, the sanctuary provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to connect with the natural world and appreciate the beauty of this unique habitat.

"I am so thankful for places like this, and to those who are committed to preserving them. Such a peaceful, beautiful area, with a vast array of plant & wildlife. You'll discover something new on each visit!"
"Love it here! Beautiful plants that you can’t see really anywhere else and it was wonderful to see how the bog works and acts! If you plan to visit please make sure to follow the rules; follow the direction of the trail and no pets are allowed. Leave no trace"
"Really great, peaceful place. The boardwalk through the woods is narrow and not completely level, so balance is important. The lookoffs and seating areas are great for bird watching and just reveling in peaceful nature."
"Beautiful place! I went in mid-May hoping to see the carnivorous plants. The pitcher plants were out in full, but sundew don't arrive til July. The boardwalk is a little precarious in places and very narrow throughout, so if you have a poor sense of balance, this may be a bit more difficult. Otherwise, there are plenty of small sitting alcoves and places to explore. Lots of fun bugs and plants. I will be back in July for those sundews!"
