Hackmatack Playhouse
About the Business
Hackmatack Playhouse, located at 538 School Street in Berwick, Maine, is a beloved institution that offers high-quality entertainment and theater to locals and visitors alike. Founded in 1972 by S. Carleton Guptill, Hackmatack has become a cornerstone of the Seacoast art scene, showcasing the talents of professional and developing thespians from the New England area.
In addition to their regular theater productions, Hackmatack Playhouse also hosts two summer theater camps for kids aged 7 to 13 in July and August. The institution is deeply rooted in the community, with the land being farmed by the Guptill family since the 1680s. Today, they raise 100% grass-fed American bison and heritage breed Mangalista pigs, with a farm store open seasonally from April to November.
Hackmatack Playhouse is not just a theater, but a place where cultural exchange and vibrant connections are fostered. They are currently seeking theater lovers to open their homes as Hackmatack Hosts for visiting out-of-state actors. In exchange, hosts receive free season passes, a special pre-show Happy Hour for friends, and a gift box of Homemade Hackmatack goodies. By becoming a host, you will have the pleasure of introducing visitors to the joys of summertime in Maine and supporting local arts and community institutions.

"I attended my cousin's wedding here a few weeks ago and everything was beautiful. We got rainy weather, but there was enough room in the venue to seat everyone inside comfortably even though we planned on using the fire pit and spending more time outside during the wedding festivities. Would definitely recommend this venue for a wedding or any kind of fun party. :)"
"Wanted to be sure to say how much we enjoyed our second visit (June '19 - "Always, Patsy Cline", and Aug '23 - "Godspell"). My wife and I live in St. Joseph, MO, and have been involved here in numerous productions with our community theater (Robidoux Resident Theater) since the early 80's on the main stage and in our dinner theater. We also serve the local company when not performing by running the dining hall and kitchen for the dinner theater shows. She has twice had the role of Louise in "Always", and the two of us have performed in "Godspell" a combined 6 times here in the area. We stumbled on Hackmatack on our 2nd trip to Maine in 2019, wanting to spend some of our time seeing local community and professional theater while traveling. We were overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised and impressed with this venue, its welcoming and comfortable atmosphere and the truly impressive talent displayed. Their recent production of "Godspell" did not disappoint! Many of the choices made for staging were uniquely thought out and added to the strength of the message; especially the crucifixion/"resurrection". The set, the musicianship of the band, the lighting, the sound...? Just a super evening and a superb job all around. Even the helpers in the concessions were all very warm and friendly. On a side note, we really enjoyed meeting and talking with a couple of the locals and the owner and his sons. Thanks for your decision to keep your theater alive/open and shows coming for locals and folks like us who "Come From Away". Hope to do/see that show some day. If we're anywhere near in the future, know that we will go out of our way to schedule another visit."
"Attended the Sunday Bluegrass concert. Good musicians. Fun times. Happy Face BBQ was excellent! Relaxing but also fun for families, animals, ice cream, etc."
"Wonderful musical! All three cast members were terrific! Pick your own seat was great! I tried a few before settling in. Beautiful smooth floors for walking, rest of threaten authentic barn! Can’t wait to go again! Great value!"
"Had the opportunity to see Tick, Tick, Boom on Friday night and WOW! The venue is amazing and the show was even better. The vocals of each thespian were powerful and spot on, and the overall experience was spectacular. Then, I wandered outside during intermission and saw... BISON! In Maine!! So glad I bought season tickets!"
