"Bezanson is a VERY nice performance space for CONCERTS! For Multimedia Performance Pieces, it was more well.......shall we say, tricky. For one thing, we had to modify the choreography, since Bezanson's stage isn't set up like a Dance Studio's floor is. The standing back blonde wood wall at the rear of Bezanson's stage was what we used for video projection. However, that presented us with some issues too, because it's not a smooth flat white wall. So, we had to bring in a hanging projection screen (which was fine), BUT it meant we couldn't perform a particular effect which mixed live action performer interaction with the video footage, (as we could performing it in Dance Studio space), so that meant re-working/re-staging/re-imagining that particular part of the piece as well. It was also an intimate, personal piece, with us as performers revealing a lot and being vulnerable in front of an audience, so Bezanson felt a little "impersonal" in terms of a performance space, considering how IMMENSE the Fine Arts Center at UMass/Amherst actually is. Performing at Bezanson was a useful experience though, (in that it forced us to be adaptive to our performance environment as performers & creative artists) but it wasn't optimal -- but I wasn't going to say no to performing there because it exposed the work to a FAR larger audience, and we were VERY privileged to be invited to such a prominent venue to perform at. After we performed it at Bezanson, we performed it in Smith College's Crew House space, which was MUCH MORE suited to the content and intimate tone of the piece -- it was my FAVORITE venue space that we performed in overall. Then we closed out the run of the piece at Mt. Holyoke, performing it in their Dance Studio space. Prior to the UMass Bezanson performances, we'd performed it in both the Amherst & Hampshire College Dance Studios (which were the original spaces we'd developed the piece in), which is the more intimate kind of venue the piece was created for & in. However, again, adaptation for a performing artist is ESSENTIAL to their personal and artistic growth, so the Bezanson performances were integral to that. The challenge was a HUGE learning experience with ZERO regrets."
"very little wheelchair accessibility. everything is surrounded by stairs, including the way down to the seats. the only ramp anywhere is on the opposite side of the building, near one of the dining halls on campus. other than that, everything was very nice. the seats in the auditorium itself are wide and comfortable."
"Great space and acoustics on UMass Amherst campus. Saw and heard the great Dave Burrell here after classes had finished for the semester. Burrell was brilliant and we were lucky to enjoy his presence and creativity outside of NYC or Europe, even."
