"Happy Pool Cover Extortion Our pool cover came off its track after my son was closing it a few Thursday afternoons ago after vacuuming the pool in preparation for a pool party we were hosting Saturday. We called HPC immediately to see if they could come out Friday to put the cover back on its track. The dispatcher offered helpful advice to put pool floats under the sinking cover which we did. That was the last moment she proved useful. Trying to get her to understand what had happened was nearly impossible. The verbal estimate provided was between $800-$1200 due to the lack of clear understanding of what had happened – despite several pictures sent to her. Trying to provide a credit card number took no less than half a dozen attempts. Keep in mind, we used Happy Pool Cover less than 2 years previously to install a replacement cover for the original cover our pool builder installed which lasted 8+ years. That installation with HPC cost $3K – full new cover, cables and various other parts, nearly full day labor, etc. To HPC’s credit, a crew pulled into our driveway the next morning before 8:00am. After assessing the situation, the technician (Patrick), said this was a much simpler job than he was originally led to believe. Upon an additional 15 minutes of reviewing why the cover came off its track, it was Patrick who showed us two screws that were used to anchor the cover to the brackets attached to the cables, not bolts. He acknowledged this was wrong and the reason the problem occurred. HPC installed this cover less than two years ago and now I have a technician saying the repair was easier than he thought and HPC’s original instillation caused the problem. So next I’m speak with the original dispatcher, who I don’t believe has spoken to her technician onsite. She’s asking for authorization to charge my credit card… for $1200. They have barely started the work. When I explained the repair was easier than originally thought and that Patrick was saying the cover failure was due to HPC’s installer using screws, not bolts, I was met with the following, “Either authorize me to run the card for the full amount or I’ll pull the guys off the job.” If you decide to work with this company, ask for Patrick to be your technician. Based on my experience with him and his honesty, I’d seriously consider co-signing a business loan for him to strike out on his own. If you feel like paying nearly half of what you paid for an original cover installation to fix a problem that the installers actually caused themselves, this might be the pool cover company for you… One star given for getting a crew out to the house next day. Two stars given for Patrick really being a class act in a tough spot. Three additional stars withheld (and writing this review) for being highly questionable in terms of ethics, standing by your workmanship and a dispatcher who was truly unpleasant to interact with."
