Scarborough Park
About the Business
Welcome to Scarborough Park, located at Christchurch, Esplanade, 147. Scarborough Park is a unique establishment that combines the elements of a park and a point of interest, creating a truly special destination for visitors of all ages.
Our playgrounds are renowned for their thoughtful landscaping and exciting equipment, providing children with a safe and physically challenging environment for play. Whether you're looking for a large complex with multiple equipment options or a small gem with breathtaking views, Scarborough Park has it all.
One of our standout playgrounds reopened in 2018 and features a mouse wheel, eagle's lair climbing net, a dancing snake rope swing, and a large climbing tower. This seaside haven also includes the iconic bright rocking horse, which now serves as a decorative element.
Another playground, opened in 2017, is located near the library and pier. It offers water cannons, musical toys, swings, slides, and even a large waka for children to climb and play in. The splash pad play area is wheelchair accessible and includes a clone of New Brighton's famous whale.
For those seeking a more natural park environment, our timber playground installed in 2016 near the lake and boatshed is the perfect choice. It features a unique rope swing made from coconut fibre rope, a first for Christchurch.
Families have long favored our large playground, which offers wetland bird-themed art elements, a flying fox, a huge climbing net, and a sandpit with a digger and water pump. Additionally, there are sheltered picnic areas, a paddling pool, scenic walks, and a free animal park nearby.
High on the Port Hills, you'll find another family-friendly destination with a playground that offers stunning city views and a speedy, old-school slide. Covered picnic tables, walks, and a visitor center add to the appeal.
Our newest playground, opened in 2015, boasts a seven-meter high climbing tower as its central feature. Children can climb the central net to a viewing area and enjoy panoramic views of the park, estuary, and Port Hills.
Scarborough Park also features upgraded playgrounds with a flying fox, basket swing, rock climbing boulder, and a circle of swings. A sealed bike track and a nearby stream with plantings provide additional recreational opportunities.
Other highlights include Craighead Reserve, which offers climbing frames, a basket swing, and a stationary train for younger children near the popular BMX track. The Styx River Esplanade Reserve features a modern playground with climbing frames, a slide, a water pump, and a flying fox. A walking track along the Styx River provides a tranquil experience.
Located near the Armagh Street entrance to the gardens, Scarborough Park offers a range of classic playground equipment, including swings and climbing towers. Recent additions of a log pile and climbing boulder enhance the nature play experience.
Last but not least, our all-ages, all-abilities playground is truly spectacular. With a four-meter-wide slide, water cannons, a climbing tower with a spiral slide, tunnels, swings, and beautiful landscaping, this playground offers something for everyone. A jetty beside the river provides a peaceful spot to feed tame eels, and a new barbecue area is coming soon.
Whether you're looking for a fun-filled family day out or an opportunity to explore and play, Scarborough Park is the ultimate destination. Visit us today and create unforgettable memories in this exceptional institution.

"Park for kids to hang out. There are a lot of activity play stations available. The place looks clean and tidy. There is a lot of space for running and having a picnic. You do not have to pay to use these facilities."
"Stunning place, and Scenery! Lots to do in and around the area. Children's park and splash pool were nice and clean. I would only suggest updating the "family" bathroom by the playground. Had no place to change my baby or to be able to breastfeed."
"There is a playground for kids, small water park, it's decent for take your kids in sunny day. And there's a gorgeous clock tower."
"Awesome playground for bigger kids (3.5+) with big slides and a climbing nest. Paddling pool is great for the little ones. The ground does get very hot on sunny days so do bring shoes. BBQ and grass area is very popular for picnics and group gatherings."
"Super lively and fun playground for all ages. Everything is new and in good shape. Free pool! Lots of shade and grassy spots to hang out with babies and toddlers. Beware of the gulls! They'll rob u blind!"
