Yatton Park
About the Business
Welcome to Yatton Park, located in Tauranga, New Zealand. Situated on Fraser Street in the Parkvale area, this establishment is not your ordinary park. It is a point of interest that holds immense cultural and historical significance.
Known by the local Tangata Whenua as Tutarawānanga, this park was once a thriving Pa site and even housed the first school in the Tauranga Moana region. With connections to Tauranga Hapū Ngā Te Ahi, Ngāti Ruahine, Ngāi Tamarawaho, and Ngāti Tapu, it holds a special place in the hearts of many.
Partially accessible to vehicles, the park is open from 8 am to 8 pm during Spring and Summer daylight saving hours, and from 8 am to 6 pm in Autumn and Winter. Its unique collection of exotic and native tree species makes it a nationally significant arboretum. These trees, planted around 1866, have competed for height rather than width, resulting in some of the tallest trees of their species in the entire country.
In November 2021, the park was officially dual named Tutarawānanga – Yatton Park, following a request by the tamariki (children) of Merivale School. After extensive research and consultation, the tamariki successfully presented their case to the Council Commissioners, highlighting the historical and cultural importance of the site.
Yatton Park is not only a place of natural beauty and history but also a popular choice for weddings throughout the year. If you are interested in hosting your special day at this enchanting location, please contact the council for more information and bookings.

Reviews
"So far from wheelchair friendly. I can barely even get my mum past the carpark area. Dangerous. The bottom walk circuit is only suitable for able bodies. Same with larger walk area. Simply dangerous pot holes and raised tree roots through concrete. The only smooth part is the short strip fixed after the cyclone. It's difficult for pushchairs, too. What a shame."
"Biggest Queensland Kauri outside of Queensland! Amazing Japanese Cedars. All planted in 1860s. Some large trees down in recent cyclone but still accessible"
"Stunning park, lots of people around, walking their dogs and having picnics/family events.. plenty of space. Public toilets and nice benches to sit down here and there with good views. Can't complain!"
"Quiet little park in the middle of suburbia. There is a bit of grassy area for a dog and walkways around the park out to the sea. Toilet on site near carpark. Small playground to keep the kids occupied. Not very flat making a football match or simliar a trouble. Water feature look a little bit rundown and in need of a clean."
"Nice big open grass area's with beautiful huge trees. Has a coun operated Bbq and has bench and table seats. Nice picnic area for the family to unwind and enjoy."
