Te Ahi Kaikōmako (Rolleston) School
About the Business
Welcome to Te Ahi Kaikōmako (Rolleston) School! Located at 11 Tennyson Street in Rolleston, New Zealand, our institution is more than just a primary school - it is a point of interest and a place of establishment.
The name Te Ahi Kaikōmako was graciously gifted to us by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, and it holds a significant meaning deeply rooted in Māori mythology. In the story of Māui and Mahuika, Mahuika placed fire in all the trees in the bush, except for the kaikōmako tree, which received the most abundant amount of fire. Fire was a vital resource for survival, and the kaikōmako tree became the most valuable source of it for early Māori.
Also known as the 'ducks foot' or the 'bellbird tree', the kaikōmako tree is not only rich in symbolism but also serves as a food source for the korimako, a beautiful native bird. The name Te Ahi Kaikōmako reflects the metaphor of our school being the source of fire for our students' learning journey. Just as the korimako feeds from the kaikōmako, our students feed from the knowledge and tools we provide, enabling them to learn and grow.
At Te Ahi Kaikōmako (Rolleston) School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where our students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
