About Kate Sheppard House
Welcome to Kate Sheppard House, located at 83 Clyde Road in Christchurch, New Zealand. As an establishment, museum, point of interest, and tourist attraction, this historic site holds immense importance in the suffragist movement. When you visit, be sure to count the dining chairs, as they symbolize the progress made by women in society.
Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House is a wheelchair accessible heritage home, allowing visitors to explore the entire museum and its beautiful gardens. The house itself is a single-story building with a wheelchair ramp and accessible toilet facilities, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience.
For your convenience, there are two designated accessible parking spaces at Kate Sheppard House. We recommend calling ahead to reserve a parking spot. Additionally, there is a combination of free and paid on-street parking on Clyde Road, with specific timings indicated on parking signs. The Clyde Car Park on Arts Road is another parking option, free after 5pm and on weekends, and pay and display during weekdays from 9am to 5pm.
During your visit, you can request tea, coffee, and refreshments. However, bookings are required in advance. We have made sure that both the indoor and outdoor areas of the museum have activities for children. Inside, they can explore the house, learn about Kate Sheppard and other inspiring Kiwi women, and discover the mischievous adventures of Polly Plum. Kids can even dress up in period costumes and look through a viewfinder to see the living room as it was during Kate's time. Outside, there are tennis and Victorian games to keep the little ones active and entertained.
Please note that some rooms or items in the house may be temporarily off-limits for conservation and maintenance purposes, as we strive to preserve our important taonga (treasures). To ensure a seamless experience and avoid disappointment, we encourage you to book your visit online in advance.
At Kate Sheppard House, we pride ourselves on being part of the Safe Space Alliance, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment for the LGBTQI community. We do not tolerate violence, bullying, or hate speech towards any individual or group.
