Mt Grey/Maukatere tracks
About the Business
Welcome to the Mt Grey/Maukatere tracks, located in the beautiful Mount Grey/Maukatere Conservation Area in Canterbury, New Zealand. This establishment is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
To access this track, you will pass through a commercial forest. Please note that the roads may occasionally be closed during extreme fire danger, high winds, or logging operations. For the most up-to-date road conditions, contact Rayonier NZ Ltd at 64 3 310 7612.
The track itself offers a steady climb through native bush and pockets of pine forest. As you ascend, you will be greeted by stunning tussock slopes that lead to the trig on the summit of Mt Grey/Maukatere, which stands at an impressive height of 934 meters.
For those looking to extend their hiking experience, you can combine this track with the Red Beech Track to create a rewarding circuit walk.
To reach the Mt Grey/Maukatere tracks from Amberley, follow Douglas Road and then Cramptons Bush Road until you reach the Lake Janet picnic area, which is approximately 17 kilometers from Amberley. From there, turn left into Mount Grey Road and then right into Okuku Road. This will lead you to the Grey River picnic area, which is 3.5 kilometers from the Lake Janet picnic area.
Please note that the ford providing access to the Grey River picnic area is only suitable for high clearance 4WD vehicles. We strongly advise parking before the ford and crossing on foot for your safety.
During the months of January to March, the area experiences high populations of wasps. To ensure a comfortable experience, we recommend wearing light-colored clothing and carrying antihistamine cream or tablets as a precaution.
Come and explore the Mt Grey/Maukatere tracks, where breathtaking views and the serenity of nature await you.

"Absolutely gorgeous walk!!!"
"Great walk, one of my favourites around Christchurch. Great bush and nice views from the top."
"Very nice track. Dogs allowed"
"Left at 3am, got to the base by 5, found the courage to walk up with the scary boars around 6, made substantial gains up the mountain by 7, heard a boar in the darkness a few meters above me, gapped it, phone died, ran out of water, ran out of food, pushed my heavy bike back up the access road, biked back home, got very sick and died. 10/10 core memory, great life experience!"
"The views would be better in better weather"
