Lake Rua
About the Business
Welcome to Lake Rua, a stunning institution located in Christchurch, New Zealand. Situated on Greywacke Road, number 54, Lake Rua is a must-visit point of interest in the area.
Lake Rua is part of the beautiful Roto Kohatu Reserve, which is home to two freshwater lakes: Tahi and Rua. This reserve is a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities such as walking, swimming, and kayaking.
As you enter the reserve, you'll come across Tahi, the first lake. Please note that this lake is leased by the Canterbury Jet Sports Club and is exclusively available for club members. To access this lake, all watercraft must be registered with the club. For more information on membership options and regulations, you can visit the Canterbury Jet Sports Club website.
To reach Lake Rua, the second lake, you'll need to head further into the reserve. Managed by Christchurch City Council Park Rangers, this public lake is a popular spot for swimming, dragon boating, and sailing. However, please refrain from diving or using powered watercraft in this lake due to the presence of underwater hazards from the site's previous use as a landfill. These hazards include tree stumps, cars, and concrete.
The water quality of Lake Rua is closely monitored during the summer months, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors. To learn more about the water quality, you can refer to Land Air Water Aotearoa.
If you plan on bringing your furry friend along, please remember to keep them leashed on all footpaths and roads, as well as around the lakes. However, dogs are allowed to be under effective control on the grassed banks before the lakes.
For those looking for a leisurely stroll, we recommend taking the 2km Lake Circuit Walk, which takes you around both Lake Tahi and Lake Rua. If you're up for a more challenging adventure, the 9km Otukaikino Track is perfect for you. This track starts from Roto Kohatu, passes through Clearwater Resort and The Groynes, and ends at Darroch Street Reserve in Belfast.
Come and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Lake Rua and the Roto Kohatu Reserve. Whether you're seeking relaxation or excitement, this institution offers something for everyone.

"Lovely place for an evening stroll. Also great during the day for a swim as there's a toilet block and outdoor showers right next to the carpark."
"Aaahhhh she feels clear in here again...lovely and clean healthy water ways...wonderful atmosphere....my only complaint is all the pristine lawns everywhere!! Bring back the bush!! But we certainly love swimming and hanging out here...."
"I didn't know this place existed! The lake is fantastic for water fun or even a walk. There's toilets and (external) showers, one picnic table, but no rubbish bins (please take it home with you). Low wind days, air planes taking off feel very close."
"Nice for walking, swimming, walking your dog. Lake is split into 2 parts. 1 for jet skiing and other boat activities. No swimming allowed here. Other part is for swimming activities. Get super busy on summer days. Very nice for youth and outgoing families as well. Expect getto blasters and a lot of activity on these busy summer days. If you are into this, great. If you want a quiet place near the water better skip it on busy days. Facilities like parking and toielts are good"
"Nice walking tracks and swimming in summer. Upgraded car parking and toilets. Water in summer is warmer than the ocean and graded good quality. You can now drive in to a carpark next to the swimming lake."
