Please note that dogs must be kept on a leash throughout the park, except for the flat eastern lawn area where they can roam freely under effective control. To ensure the safety of children, dogs are not allowed within one meter of the playground equipment.

Originally built as a private homestead in the 1860s, it was later transformed into a public park and playground by the Council in 1939. Efforts were made to preserve the park's 19th-century character, resulting in the retention of the original trees, shrubs, and even a pavilion made from one of the homestead's rooms.

Abberley Park also holds a special place in the hearts of visually impaired individuals. In the 1950s, a garden for the blind was designed by Huia Gilpin, the Director of the Botanic Gardens at the time. This garden, known as the Scented Garden, was created to serve the nearby Institute of the Blind hostel 'Fernwood' and still retains remnants of its original design.
