GNS Science
About the Business
Welcome to GNS Science, an establishment and point of interest located at Fairway Drive, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. At GNS Science, our mission is to conduct research that enhances our understanding of geological and Earth system processes, while increasing Aotearoa New Zealand's resilience to natural hazards and climate change.
Aotearoa New Zealand is no stranger to frequent damaging earthquakes, yet we currently lack an official national earthquake early warning system. That's why we are dedicated to driving innovation and growth to ensure that risk, the environment, and our natural resources are sustainably managed for a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous future.
Our research focuses on a wide range of areas. We explore the past and present health and biodiversity of Lake Wairarapa, providing valuable insights into the ecosystem. Additionally, our team has captured never-seen-before 3D images inside New Zealand's largest fault, shedding light on its inner workings.
We strongly believe that the most important thing in the world is people. As the famous Maori saying goes, "He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata." This philosophy underlies all our endeavors and drives us to create a low-carbon future, build resilience to climate change and geohazard risk, and innovate our energy system.
Our commitment to research is evident in the various projects we undertake. For example, our team drilled sediment cores on the summit of Friis Hills in Antarctica to gain insights into the continent's past climate. We also revolutionize ground movement monitoring in New Zealand, utilizing modern data science methods for earth science research and contributing to the growth of data science capabilities.
One of our notable achievements is the creation of our first map of vertical land movement, which directly impacts the rise and fall of our coastline and local sea levels. This accomplishment showcases the complexity of measuring such movements and highlights our expertise in understanding geological processes.

Reviews
"Great Science and Research Institute."
"Awesome place to work"
"This place is a must for teachers of all levels including home schoolers. Their library is extensive, the quality of resources is amazing. I have used them many times. If you know your topic or need some extra tuition they used to be able to help I don't know if they still do this side of things. Guest speakers but be specific about tour topic because this is such a wide field an exciting one get your students hooked on science. I did and even now they say hey you taught me science it was so cool. Never be afraid of getting away fro chalk and talk. Science lives in every aspect. Signed an enthusiast."
"GNS Science (Te Pū Ao) is a major New Zealand research institute that studies geology, geophysics and nuclear science. Formerly the Institute of Geosciences and Nuclear (IGNS) from 1992 to 2005. Well worth a visit, learn, explore."
