Bendigo Botanic Gardens
About the Business
Welcome to the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, a historic and captivating destination nestled in the heart of regional Victoria. Established in 1857, these gardens hold a significant place in Bendigo's rich history, dating back to just a few years after the discovery of gold in the area. In fact, the site of the gardens appeared on a plan of the White Hills township as early as 1854.
As one of Bendigo's first public gardens, the Bendigo Botanic Gardens have been recognized for their historical, architectural, scientific, botanical, aesthetic, and social importance. In 2001, the gardens were included on the Victorian Heritage Register, solidifying their status as a cherished cultural landmark.
The gardens boast a diverse collection of shade trees and lush green turf, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. It's no wonder that both locals and visitors alike flock to this popular destination. The Bendigo Botanic Gardens provide an idyllic setting for family gatherings, picnics, barbecues, and celebrations, making it a beloved part of the community.
The centerpiece of the gardens is the Heritage Garden, which surrounds a picturesque billabong and showcases various display gardens and plant collections. Visitors can explore enchanting areas such as the Victorian Goldfields Cottage Garden, the Habitat Garden, the Edwardian Garden, the Indigenous Garden, the Northern Victorian Garden, the National Lavender Collection, and the National Canna Collection.
For families, the Bendigo Botanic Gardens offer a delightful Playspace and the Arch of Triumph, a remarkable structure also listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Additionally, the Garden for the Future, opened in 2018, presents a contemporary botanic garden experience with its Fun and Fantasy Garden, Around Australia Garden, Around the World Garden, and an events stage and shelter for concerts and large events.
In October 2022, the Larni Garingilang precinct was unveiled, bridging the gap between the existing gardens and the Bendigo Creek. This new addition encourages visitors to connect with the landscape and the creek. Larni Garingilang, meaning "home of growth" in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung, the traditional owners of the land, features a modern cafe/restaurant/function center building, community rooms, gathering and educational spaces, wetlands and ponds, a stormwater harvesting system, and over 15,000 indigenous plants and trees.
Whether you're seeking fun, relaxation, or quality time with loved ones, the Bendigo Botanic Gardens are the perfect destination. Explore the gardens on a guided tour, learn about the Bendigo Botanic Garden Master Plan, or join the Friends of Bendigo Botanic Gardens to support this cherished institution. Educational programs and tours can be booked through the City of Greater Bendigo's Tourism Centre for just $5 per person.

"When using this park please do the right thing and place your rubbish in bins provided. This person belonging to this car sat with her kids on the lawn to eat and when finished just walked off and left her mess behind...show some respect for the area as others use it to."
"Absolutely gorgeous area, Parkrun was awesome!!! The Parkrun community is always so welcoming, & today there were loads of tourists to this site, beautiful day & lovely drink afterwards at The Vibe cafe"
"Beautiful day for a walk, Situated in white hills, Beautiful lawn, sounds of bird life. Excellent place for a family picnic, public toilet and playground. Gates shut at 9pm. The bird Aviary closed, By the looks there are no birds in there. So abit disappointed with that. Still a beautiful garden and lovely walk with paved pathways, easy for wheelchairs etc."
"Pretty small compared to other Botanic gardens in Vic but if you are local or nearby, can stop by for a rest or picnic. Has public toilet, some benches and a playground. Nice spot for a quick picnic or just to chill out in a hot day. If you go for a roadtrip to Bendigo, can skip this if no time. Opening hours 7:30am-6pm or until 9pm during daylight savings. Free entry."
"So many different zones and things for people to do. Take a picnic, play in the playground, learn about different grapes⦠Wish the aviary was open but we could see the beautiful birds at a distance. Could do with more shaded seating options though."
