About Dingo Discovery Sanctuary, Research and Education Centre
Welcome to Dingo Discovery Sanctuary, Research and Education Centre, located in Toolern Vale, on Gisborne-Melton Road. Our institution is not just an establishment or park, but a point of interest and a must-visit tourist attraction in Australia.
At Dingo Discovery, we believe in the quote, "To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering." That's why our dedicated team of volunteers works tirelessly to ensure the wellbeing and high-quality care for our resident animals. We also undertake various tasks such as veterinary care, legal and investment advice, molecular laboratory work, recreational training, fundraising, school education visits, and participation in public and community events.
Situated on 40 acres in the picturesque foothills of the Macedon Ranges, just 35 minutes from Melbourne's CBD, our sanctuary and research centre is a unique conservation establishment. Since its establishment in 1990, our primary goals have been to preserve and conserve the gene pool of the original dingo, educate the public on the species' ecological function in Australian ecosystems, facilitate non-invasive scientific research, and participate in the future rehabilitation of the dingo.
We offer guided tours that run for 1.5 hours at either 11 am or 2 pm. Please note that tours are available via appointment and are subject to volunteer availability.
As a non-profit organization, we rely on the support of donors, both individuals and corporations, large or small. Your sponsorship helps us provide care for each individual animal, including food, enrichment, medications, enclosure maintenance, and basic needs.
The dingo (Canis dingo) is an iconic, Australian native wild canid that is loved by the majority of the populace. Over the past decade, there has been a marked shift in the public and scientific communities' attitude towards the role and protection of dingoes in Australia. They play an important ecological function as Australia's only terrestrial top predator, regulating and suppressing many species such as kangaroos, rabbits, foxes, and cats, which naturally promotes ecosystem balance.
Unfortunately, dingoes have faced cultural persecution and have become a convenient scapegoat for profit losses, similar to the fate of the grey wolf (Canis lupus). However, many studies are now finding a case for the re-introduction of dingoes into previously occupied habitat ranges to restore balance to environmentally degraded areas caused by unregulated farming practices.
Dingoes have faced ongoing threats such as bounty hunts, trapping, and 1080 baiting. They are currently considered threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), particularly along the south-eastern seaboard of Australia, where agricultural and urban developments dominate. It is up to sanctuaries like ours to fight for the protection and future of the dingo.
In 2006, The Australian Dingo Foundation was formed to bring relief and hope to the survival of this incredible species. We obtained recognition as a conservation-orientated organization with charity status from the Federal Government in 2007. The ADF oversees the wellbeing of the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre and ensures the preservation of its precious gene pool, securing a future for dingoes. Dingoes are a unique, wild canid species that need to be appreciated as a vital "cog" for the functioning of our Australian environment.
Come and visit Dingo Discovery Sanctuary, Research and Education Centre to learn more about these amazing creatures and contribute to their conservation efforts. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the survival of the dingo for future generations.
