Our establishment is dedicated to being a strong voice for women in the development of law and legal policy. We strive to provide easy-to-understand legal information publications, ensuring that women have the knowledge and resources they need to navigate the legal system.

At Women's Legal Service Tasmania, we are committed to advocating for gender equality and supporting women who are experiencing violence. While we welcome the structural changes outlined in the Federal Budget 2023, we believe that vital legal support for women in these situations is missing and must be addressed.

Our institution has recently made a submission to the Department of Justice in relation to the Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2022, highlighting our ongoing efforts to shape legal policy and protect the rights of women. We are also grateful for the additional funds allocated to community legal assistance for Tasmanians through the state election campaign and the Women's Budget Statement.

In addition to our advocacy work, we are excited to announce the launch of a new podcast series that aims to empower women and encourage allies. This series will shed light on the challenges within the Australian legal system and provide valuable insights.

We are also delighted to share the news of Sandra Taglieri SC's appointment to the Federal Circuit Court, a significant achievement for both her and our organization. This appointment reinforces our commitment to promoting diversity and representation within the legal profession.

Women's Legal Service Tasmania, in partnership with Engender Equality, is facing funding shortfalls and cutbacks without increased government investment. We urge the government to prioritize the urgent need for a response to family violence and provide the necessary support to organizations like ours.

Our institution recently launched a podcast series called "Rule of Thumb," which exposes the difficulties faced by women as they navigate the family law system. This series highlights the importance of legal support and aims to raise awareness of the challenges women encounter.
