Flagstaff Point Lighthouse (Wollongong Head) LOT 2 Endeavour Drive, Wollongong, New South Wales 2500
About the Business
Welcome to Flagstaff Point Lighthouse, located on Wollongong Head in beautiful Wollongong, Australia. As the only point on the eastern coast of Australia with two lighthouses, our institution is a must-visit for tourists and locals alike.
Constructed in 1936 by the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service, our newer lighthouse on Wollongong Head serves as a vital aid for vessels navigating into Port Kembla. Made of reinforced concrete, the tower includes a lantern that houses the historic 1863 first order Chance Brothers fixed lens, which was recovered from Gabo Island and converted to a rotating optic in 1935.
With a total cost of £6,800 ($13,600), including £2,607 ($5,214) for plant and equipment, this lighthouse was the first fully automatic and unattended lighthouse in New South Wales. Initially, a temporary acetylene gas light was used until the Chance Brothers equipment arrived in October 1938. The acetylene apparatus remained as a standby light until a diesel generator was installed in the 1960s.
Our light, known as an occulting light, is white with two red sectors, and it flashes for 4.5 seconds before a 1.5-second dark period. The red sectors indicate navigation hazards to vessels, ensuring their safe passage. This lighthouse was specifically built to serve as a coastal light, particularly for ships entering Port Kembla to the south of Flagstaff Point.
Before the construction of Flagstaff Point Lighthouse, the only aid for ships in the area was the old Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, situated at Belmore Basin to the northwest. However, as Port Kembla replaced Wollongong Harbour as the commercial port for the Illawarra area, the Breakwater light was discontinued in May 1974.
Flagstaff Point Lighthouse has never been manned, but the Wollongong Harbour Master attends to it when necessary. We invite you to explore our historic institution, learn about its significance, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the coastline.

"Wollongong, Australia boasts a unique coastal feature: two lighthouses. The Breakwater lighthouse, though inactive since 1974, stands 40 feet tall with a tapered wrought iron tower and lantern. Contrastingly, the Flagstaff Hill lighthouse remains active and is characterized by its all-white structure. Nestled on Wollongong Harbour's Flagstaff Hill, the location holds historical significance as a point Captain James Cook passed in 1770. The serene atmosphere and tourist-friendly appeal make it a must-visit spot. The juxtaposition of the two lighthouses and the rich historical narrative add to the charm of this peaceful destination."

"I live in Wollongong and never feel bored visiting this place and almost come everyday. A lot of parking space and few restaurants are also available to get some good food. Public toilets are available at walking distance. You will get to see spectacular views of Wollongong beach. Highly recommend on a sunny day - preferable to witness sunrise."
