The Hutchins School
About the Business
Located at 71 Nelson Road in Sandy Bay, Tasmania, Australia, The Hutchins School is a renowned Anglican day and boarding school for boys from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. With a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1846, Hutchins has a strong tradition of nurturing individuals of character and prioritizing the wellbeing of all its students.
At Hutchins, we believe in providing exceptional opportunities for boys to flourish and become the best versions of themselves. Our vision revolves around empowering students to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. To learn more about our vision and the exceptional educational experience we offer, we invite you to join us at our upcoming Open Day on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Guided tours will be available at 9.00am and 11.00am, allowing you to explore our campus and discover the myriad of possibilities awaiting your child.
One of the recent highlights at Hutchins was Book Week, where our Early Learning Centre and Junior School students immersed themselves in various reading and book appreciation activities. The theme for this event was 'Read. Grow. Inspire.', emphasizing the importance of literature in fostering personal growth and inspiration.
Celebrating our 177th Anniversary on August 3, 2023, we brought together our Middle and Senior Students in the Senior School Quad for a delightful BBQ lunch, catered by each of the Houses. This event allowed our students to bond and commemorate the rich heritage of our institution.
Promoting cultural understanding and unity, we had the privilege of hosting Aunty Brenda Matthews, who shared her personal story of discovering the truth about her past and fostering connections between black and white Australia. This event was a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and embracing diverse narratives.
At Hutchins, we recognize and nurture the talents of our students. Our Performing Arts Scholarships offer a remarkable opportunity for gifted and passionate individuals to join our vibrant and thriving performing arts program. We believe in providing a platform for students to excel in their artistic pursuits and develop their creative potential.
Sports also play an integral role in the Hutchins experience. On the last day of Term 2, our students showcased their athletic prowess in the Southern Tasmanian Dancing Eisteddfod at Wrest Point. Additionally, Winter Sports Day saw Middle School and Senior School students competing in their Houses across a range of sports, including Australian Rules football, badminton, European handball, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, soccer, squash, and volleyball.
We take pride in our commitment to promoting intellectual growth and fostering a love for strategic thinking. As evidence of this, we hosted the Hobart City (Secondary) Interschool Chess Competition, providing a platform for students to showcase their chess skills and engage in friendly competition.
Collaboration is key, and we believe in working together with other educational institutions. The Hutchins and St Michael's Collegiate School Careers Expo was a resounding success, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for our students.

"Hutchins! Hutchins! grand and fair! The only School we serve; For thee till death we’ll do and dare, And nought can make us swerve. Let your voices ring, lads! ‘Tis the old School’s due. Sing her praises, sing lads - Hutchins! Hutchins! tried and true! Thy name a’down the ages past, Thy sons salute and cheer; And so shall we while life doth last, With lips and lives revere. Let your voices ring, lads! ‘Tis the old School’s due. Sing her praises, sing lads - Hutchins! Hutchins! tried and true! We learn thine ivied tower beneath, To play the game of life, And know they only win the wreath Who strive in honour’s strife. Let your voices ring, lads! ‘Tis the old School’s due. Sing her praises, sing lads - Hutchins! Hutchins! tried and true! May all thy sons prove ever true, Whate’er their gifts and powers, That men may yield to thee thy due, Beloved School of ours! Let your voices ring, lads! ‘Tis the old School’s due. Sing her praises, sing lads - Hutchins! Hutchins! tried and true!"
"Great school, they go out of their way to encourage the boys to do whatever interests them. No one is forced to be a footy player or academic genius if they don't want to - yet Hutchins manage to create an environment where the boys become superstars regardless. I use public transport all the time and wherever I encounter the boys they are courteous and quiet."
